Jun 15, 2014 8:01 PM in response to thomas_r.by SteveH,OK - I've followed the Pathes and removed the AVG from Start Up items.
I see under User Launch Agents the Avast Install.plist, but I'm not sure where to find it - no path is shown
(but, it also shows "not loaded).
I also see "Cocktail" in Statup items - should I delete this as well?
Also, under Launch Agents I see SpeedUpMyMac - does this matter? It does show loaded - but, again
no path is shown.

Jun 15, 2014 8:07 PM in response to dianeoforegonby SteveH,The CleanMyMac I see is listed under Support as not loaded. I'm not sure that I ever actually installed this - while I visited the site and likely did download it - I think I just trashed after giving it more thought.

Everything you have mentioned is junk, get rid of it all, and I would take care to remove it correctly.

Jun 16, 2014 3:06 AM in response to SteveHby thomas_r.,How do I find them & how do I remove them correctly?
You need to use the proper uninstaller provided by the developer of each of those apps. See:

Jun 16, 2014 11:51 AM in response to SteveHby dianeoforegon,Cocktail is one you only rarely use. There is no need for it to launch in Login Items.
Login Items are to help launch applications you use all the time, but you don't actually need any items in Login items list. Remove them all and see if you see any imporvements. You can always add them back.

I don't think you read the Discussion dianeoforegon linked earlier. If you did read it, you did not appreciate its implications.
Here it is again:
How to reinstall OSX Mavericks without Losing data?
Read the whole Discussion, and return here if anything in it requires clarification.

Jun 16, 2014 7:01 PM in response to John Galtby SteveH,★HelpfulThank you for reposting the link - I'm not sure how I missed it the first time, but I have had a whole lot
of information in reply's. It is quite a discussion and I greatly appretiate what is involved.
I have already set-up with a partitioned EHD, so that I can eventually do a "clean" install.
I have my SL files on the other partition of the EHD so I can transfer my files over to Maverick after
the "clean" install is compleated.
Of course I was very much hoping not to have to go this route - but, after reading the discussion - I see there is no real better choice.
