Q: Wifi disconnects after sleep and takes long time to reconnect with Mavericks

Since upgrading to Mavericks whenever my MacBook Air goes to sleep (if I leave it idle) the wifi disconnects and it can take up to a minute to reconnect when it wakes.

Basically what happens is, as soon as it wakes I have no internet connection, the WiFi indicator is pulsing, meaning it is searching for networks, but it takes ages to find any, then after some time, usually between 30 secs and a minute all the networks in my building pop up and it instantly at that point reconnects to my WiFi network.

It is incredibly frustrating I was so used to the Mac being an instant on tool, now it takes longer to get on the internet than booting up my windows PC.

Any ideas what might have caused this?

Okay, who's got Yosemite beta access... Is there some light at the end of this long tunnel? I get palpably excited at the prospect of getting off this never-ending support thread. Don't disappoint me.

brand new MBP and I found this thread because I have the same exact problem. No peripheries or anything, but if close the book (fold it, put it to sleep) and open it I have to wait too long for it to find the my network again. NEVER had this problem with my last macbook pro. sometimes it asks me to run the diagnostics which is a complete waste of time because my network connection is just fine. I have also found that the battery life isnt too impressive.

10.9.3 update did not fix this for me.  I will try the script as a workaround.

Apple put out an update to firmware today aimed to fix wakeup when devices connected.  It listed usb and lightnight devices, but it may also include bluetooth.  Did anyone have this fix their issue?  Did the issue remain for anyone after?

I have the problem of WiFi not working on my new MacBookPro Retina (2013) when coming back from sleep.  My older MBP from 2008 and my wife's MBP do not have this problem.

Note - I do not have Bluetooth on or any Bluetooth devices associated with this laptop.

The only way to get the network working again is to turn the WiFi off and then on again on the Mac.  Then everything works just fine until I sleep the machine again.

I have no devices connected to it (USB, etc) when this happens.

That is the problem we are describing here, system cannot recover wifi after wakeup.

Aren't you annoyed by turning on and off wifi each time?  I am not sure what the cause of your issue is if you have bluetooth turned off,  but it is likely a software or device you have connected (in addition to apple's OS having this bug).  I would suggest you restore your mac to when it was first built, if possible, because I would expect when you first got it, it didnt have this issue

That is the same problem I have - the system can't recover WiFi after wakeup.  I have no devices connected and when I boot from my backup partition (a plain jane fresh install os OS-X that I put on all my machines just in case some repair or recovery is needed).  I have the exact same problem there.

Since I have AppleCare I may try with them.  It is annoying that it drops like this.

Note, this is a 5GHz 802.11-n network with WPA2 but since no other equipment I have in the house is showing the same problem to either the 5GHz or 2.4GHz network, I am rather confident that it is the Mac.

Yes I would suggest trying AppleCare.  Even if you dont have a contract, apple support should be able to help you, I have heard several cases where apple gives a brand new laptop if this issue occurs, because it is really not acceptable to have to retry wifi after each sleep - many people use the laptop primarily for internet access so this is an essential function.  Dont let them tell you it is router related - take your mac to starbucks and I am confident it will fail there too - apple cannot force users to use apple-approved routers, laptops must work in all environments.

    Good luck

    Hi There,

    You should try this solution.

    It apparently fixed mine.

    Best,

Will try again but, as I said, BlueTooth is not even turned on.  (I have yet to use BlueTooth on the rMBP)

I have Bluetooth so turned off that even the "Bluetooth Assistent" is turned off (all options in the advanced preferences are off)
