Jun 17, 2014 1:38 PM in response to ryane84by turingtest2,One song, one set of tag information, as many playlists as you like.
Same song with different metadata requires a new file, each can also go in as many playlists as you like but will have separate ratings, play counts etc.

Jun 17, 2014 5:09 PM in response to ryane84by turingtest2,Right-click on the song and click on Show in Windows Explorer.
Select the file and press Ctrl+C to copy.
Browse to <Media Folder>\Automatically Add to iTunes and press Ctrl+V to paste.
Locate the new copy of the song in iTunes and edit the tag to suit.

Jun 20, 2014 4:59 PM in response to Ralph Landry1by the fiend,Hi Ralph,
In case you're interested, I have proposed a solution to ryane84 in the following thread; Re: Re: Re: how do i make the same song have two different genre and asked that he/she lets us (all) know if it is of any use to him/her.
Regards,
Phil
P.S. (Apologies to tt2, who now has this information twice.)

Jun 20, 2014 5:36 PM in response to the fiendby ryane84,if I make the smart playlist and I have 2 ipods on my itunes how do I give them but the same song but one is rock and one is workout?and will it make duplicates of the song?

Jun 20, 2014 5:54 PM in response to ryane84by turingtest2,A playlist is an ordered list of songs from your library.
A song of any genre can be added to any playlist, for smart playlists you either adjust the rules, or the song's metadata or both, until it works the way you want it to.
You can use regular or smart playlists to include the same song in the playlist that is called Rock (or My Playlist) and the playlist that is called Workout (or Mum's Playlist). The playlist doesn't care about the genre. Neither does the song. The only time the genre matters is if you're using the Genre menu to choose what to play.
Each device can have from zero to many playlists synced to it, as well as other specific stuff like individual albums, or all tracks by a certain artist. Using these methods doesn't change the genre of a song.
On your devices you can use different menus with the music app to play content, Playlists, Artists, Albums, Genres etc. Playlists is the one that gives you most control over both the content and the order.

Jun 20, 2014 6:06 PM in response to ryane84by turingtest2,Why are you focusing on the genre?
Playlist 1:
Song A
Song B
Song C
Playlist 2:
Song C
Song D
Song E
Song C is in both playlists. If I sync playlist 1 to my device and playlist 2 to my son's we each get a copy of song C (which is what we want), along with the other stuff that we each want, and only what we each want. One song, multiple playlists, no need to worry about the genre.

ryane84:
I think we have all asked you why you feel the need to focus on the Genre of a song? It really doesn't matter, as there are other ways of achieving what you want and in an attempt to solve your problem, we have suggested several things:
- The simplest is to create a regular playlist, with the songs you want, regardless of the genre. You choose the songs you want, add them to the Playlist, name it and you're done. Then your mother makes her own playlist with the songs she wants, again, regardless of Genre and regardless of whether any of those songs are in your Playlist. It makes no difference what the Genre of a song is - you put the songs you want into your Playlist, your mother puts the songs she wants in her Playlist. End of story.
- If you wish to automate the process (and thereby make it easier to change the Playlist at a later date), I have suggested a Smart Playlist and given you step-by-step instructions to follow. You could have made that Playlist by now and seen for yourself whether it fits your needs.
- None of this creates a second copy of the song (to address one of your other concerns).
- If you and your mother are using the same iTunes Library, but have your own iPods, then perhaps you are each Syncing selected Playlists to your own devices. Again, that does not matter. The only difference in this case is that there will now be a copy of the song on each iPod. But only one copy in your iTunes Library.
To finish -
- you cannot have one song in two Genres.
- You can simulate a second Genre for a song by using a Smart Playlist, as described in one of your other threads. If you are having difficulty following my instruction for the Smart Playlist (perhaps because of a minor error in that instruction), then tell us and we can sort it out.

Jun 22, 2014 3:38 PM in response to ryane84by turingtest2,With regular playlists you drag and drop in the songs that you want. With a smart playlist you edit a set of rules and items that match the rules are included in the list. the fiend gave a nice write up of smart playlists in your other thread: how do i make the same song have two different genre.
