Q: Using the new-look forums, asking for positive comments

Dear Fellow Users,

I am starting a discussion on how to make the most of this revised website for Apple Support Communities. Please keep this discussion positive. Please confine complaints to one of the many negative threads.

Remember that many of these changes are the result of feedback to Apple. We may have got what we wished for.

Gains:

- Spell checker in the Reply box;

-

New ways of working:

- The blue dot has gone. I can't tell which discussions I have or haven't read.

Tip by deggie. In the home page of a forum, click to the right of the address bar of your browser, add /content at the end of the URL. Press enter. You will see three options across the page just above the threads: All Content, User Tips and Discussions. Click on Discussions. Threads with new content will have titles that are in bold. Now save that page in your browser bookmarks. For example, my bookmark for the 'Using Apple Support Communities' forum, shows this URL:

https://discussions.apple.com/community/using_apple_support_communities/content? filterID=contentstatus%5Bpublished%5D~objecttype~objecttype%5Bthread%5D

And the view is Bold for unread

Screen Shot 2014-06-22 at 12.20.17 am.png

- The forums keep logging me off after a period of inactivity.

Good. That may stop the spammers posting multiple messages that have nothing to do with the purpose of a forum.

More gains or workarounds, anyone?

Regards,

Ian.

Couldn't agree more on the iOS user thing. I have said as much in my thread and others on the first day I discovered the NewSite had rolled out.

    ============================

DISCLAIMER: Hosts, The following IS Positive in nature and NOT to be construed as a rant or complaint in any way

    ============================

iOS is a huge chunk of current revenue for Apple so I agree that iOS users NEEDED a solution. BUT, as I also have said, it would have been so easy to simply detect the iOS at AppleID login and direct them to this place -- leaving everyone else that are Apple's historical core customers -- Graphic Design Professionals, Video Professionals, New Media Professionals, Software Authors, (ad infinitum) -- to have the familiar (and user customized I might add) to work in what they were used to.

That would have worked as the database is the database is the database... MyOldPosts are transfered to the NewSite.

Remeber when cell phones first began to get Web capability. All the BIG PLAYERS on the Web  created a "mobile.BigPlayerSite.com" for just that purpose

enuff for now before I get this sent to the DogHouse

Because this new version of Jive adds the edit function that means it was designed for iOS? Other than that it does not really look any better on an iPhone than the last one and maybe just a bit worse with the new font. If Jive was going to do something for iOS users they would create an app and put it in the App Store.

(Given the income percentages between the Mac and iOS though gearing the platform towards iOS users would actually make business sense.)

deggie, you are spot on insightful and right on all counts, as usual... Wish I could think/write like you!

Sorry, I didn't mean to talk down to anyone. It wasn't a lesson in how to use a browser, just a tip about the forum navigation buttons going to the default view.

If this discussion becomes the basis for a User Tip, then newcomers will welcome such tips.

Neat. (That is if I am not still in Wonderland)

Don't worry whether something is a gain. Good to post it. I have goofed on a couple of things I thought were gains. But in a way, if I can now find them, that is a gain of improved layout!

Welllllll.. I am thinkin I may still be in Wonderland.

I still see the list appear to update, in that a post will jump to the top of it. BUT,

This phenomenon, I believe, is ALWAYS after I have navigated to said list from elsewhere. What I see...

Page loads  with a List - while Status Bar reports still in progress

I stop paying attention to status bar to attend to the list

Whoa! an item pops to the top of the list

It could be that said list has not really fully loaded and sorted itself.

I'm still here. It's funny as Apple will not answer any questions but delete posts all the time. The moderation is political methinks.

The moderators occasionally make mistakes -- after all, they are just as human as the rest of us. But having had the opportunity to read some of their comments in the private Lounge section, I sincerely believe their only goal is to make sure users are following the ASC terms of use & doing whatever else they can to make these forums as pleasant & as useful as possible for as many people as possible.

In fact, they are often more tolerant of minor ToU infractions than some of the high level users with Lounge privileges, who sometimes get frustrated about the minor (& occasionally not quite so minor) rants that are allowed to stand after being reported to the mods by other users.

    R C -R,

You are probably right that the Hosts do their best regarding ToU infractions.

My only arguement with that would be that in their 'subjectivity' they don't apply it evenly.

I had a post removed that I will take up privately with them in Feedback. But I will say this much here... in no way was it as they so kindly explained in their noreply eMail. The eMailSendingHost said it contained 'rants' and 'complaints' which it DID NOT. They musta been 'more tolerant' (as you say) of when I really WAS Ranting & Complaining in my authored thread "... Apple or MicroHard". It DID contain references to other community software that competes with JiveSoftware

I have noticed that ONLY SOME replies have a "report" link at the bottom of the post. Geez, there was aeven a ReportLink on one of Yellowbox's replies to me -- there was absolutely nothing in that or any other post by Yellowbox that could warrant reporting.

    Go figger.

better stop before they DogHouse this one

Should this work with Safari on an iPad? The link works fine for the relevant community but adding "/content" after the URL for the Mavericks community just repeats the page without showing number of replies etc.

    martin from,

A (not quick) workaround to jump to page:

Of course every page has a unique URL such Page 1 of this thread...

Using the new-look forums, asking for positive comments or

          https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6410726

each page likewise... for instance Page 2...

Using the new-look forums, asking for positive comments or

          https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6410726?start=15&tstart=0

NOTICE the "?start=15&start0" APPENDED to the Page 1 URL, where:

"?start=15" = the 16th post in the thread or Page 2 of the thread because the SiteWare makes 15 Post pages

    AND

the "&start=0" portion of the added URL = the 1st post on that page (posts on page = #0 thru #14 or 15 posts)

If you KNOW how many pages exist at a certain time, to get to a certain page:

add "?start=n&start0" to the Page 1 URL where n = 15 X number of pages you want

"?start=45&start0" would take you to Page 3, Post 1

    AND

"?start=135&start0" would take you to Page 9, Post 1

    AND so on

As with any workaround, kinda un-elegant.

    Keeps your multiplication skills sharp?

    Hope this helps

Preface -- I don't know if this is New or Not... Ian?

Multiple Undo/Redo HISTORY in Editor -- This feature is common in many Applications and the Editor

We all know Command + Z = Undo ALWAYS

Traditionally, Command + Z Again = Redo (Undo the Undo)

In some Applications, traditionally, Command + SHIFT + Z =  Redo as well

In some Applications and forunately in the Editor, Command + Z Repeatedly = Undo, Undo, Undo. etc. maybe until you get to your original starting point (there May be a limited number in the Editor -  In PhotoShop, for instance, the number of Undos is a 'History' User Preference)

In some Applications and forunately in the Editor, Command + SHIFT + Z = Redo

Repeat Command + SHIFT + Z = Redo, Redo, Redo, etc. until you reach your last keystroke

    Handy

    Buenos Noches

    Dear Fellow Users,

An update of positive and relevant replies.

Thank you Carolyn Samit, ChitlinsCC, deggie, etresoft, gail from maine, R C-R, t quinn for your positive replies and support. Please forgive me if if have not acknowledged a contributor.

    As ChilinsCC wrote:

... as for ... basis for a user tip ... one will have to edit like crazy the way it has de-volved

Too right, CC! I may have missed an acknowledgement or two in sifting through all those replies!

    Gains:

Some of these may not be gains in the new-look forum. Some are merely "Aha! I didn't know that has always been there!" Please consider these tips as gains to your knowledge. Don't worry whether something is really a gain. Please post your ideas without fear. I have goofed on a couple of things I thought were gains. But in a way, if I can now find them, that is a gain of improved layout!

    - Improved Spell checker in the Reply box.

    - The Search feature automatically updates as you edit the search terms.

    - Advanced Search automatically updates as you refine the search criteria.

    - Advanced Search now allows you to choose only those questions that have been answered (but not necessarily 'Problem Solved')!

    - Please insert any other 'Gains' you have found into a reply.

    New ways of working:

    - The blue dot has gone. I can't tell which discussions I have or haven't read.

In the home page of a forum, click to the right of the address bar of your browser, add /content at the end of the URL. Press enter. You will see three options across the page just above the threads: All Content, User Tips and Discussions. Click on Discussions. Threads with new content will have titles that are in bold. Now save that page in your browser bookmarks. For example, my bookmark for the 'Using Apple Support Communities' forum, shows this URL:

    https://discussions.apple.com/community/using_apple_support_communities/content? filterID=contentstatus%5Bpublished%5D~objecttype~objecttype%5Bthread%5D

And the view is Bold for unread.

I added "/content" to an URL, but that doesn't stick!

Perhaps adding /content to an URL doesn't stick because clicking on the "Return to Numbers for Mac" button at the bottom of a discussion returns us to the default view.

Instead, use the back button in your browser to return to the previous forum view. (With apologies to all who know about the Back button in a browser; this tip is how return to your chosen view, instead of the default view set by the forum navigation buttons).

    - I can't find my discussions

Click on Content > Discussions > Participated (for discussions that you have replied in), or Content > Discussions > Authored (for discussions that you initiated).

    - Incoming Links

The incoming Links button is now at the bottom of a discussion and is more clearly marked.

    - The forum software logs me out as I am composing a reply.
Compose your reply in TextEdit or a word processor, then Copy and Paste into a reply box after logging back in.
Hint: the default Lucida Grande font in these forums does not take italic or bold in a word processor. It must be a feature of the forum editor that mimics italic and bold. Compose your reply with a font such as Helvetica to see formatting in your word processor. Copy and Paste into a a reply.

(Note, automatic logout [timeout] may not be a permanent feature. We shall wait and see).

    - My View

Use the /content page as a kind of menu...
    Control+[click the link] = opens the link in a new tab;
    Do whatever;
    Close the tab;
    Voila, back your makeshift menu.
Reload the page (command r) if you wish.

      - Advanced search
If you can’t find what you’re looking for with the Search or Ask a Question bar, try an advanced search. Click Search near the upper-right corner of any communities page. Type your search terms and press Return. Then use the advanced search tools to find what you need.

My aim is to turn this summary into a User Tip (hints and workarounds from fellow users) for newcomers to these Apple Support Communities.

    Regards,

    Ian.

Fellas get the quote martin from's disappeared post sorted out...

Is the WHOLE post gone OR just the quote from the missing original?

If the whole thing is gone, we know the answer... JailHouse

If EDITED out = we know the answer... no Jail, just a warning from the sheriff

if the latter is the case point us to it by author & page #

Either way - we will have answered the question about mysterious disappearnce or removal

Which begs the question... why are we shielded from knowing that these things are being done. We all seem to be grown folks here. I think all this time we are spending wondering, investigating, etc. is a catastrophic waste. IF REMOVALs/EDITs ARE documented IN PLACE we would take a lesson and go on with good works

I can't see any benefit to Apple or the Community for secrecy.
