Q: Using the new-look forums, asking for positive comments

Dear Fellow Users,

I am starting a discussion on how to make the most of this revised website for Apple Support Communities. Please keep this discussion positive. Please confine complaints to one of the many negative threads.

Remember that many of these changes are the result of feedback to Apple. We may have got what we wished for.

Gains:

- Spell checker in the Reply box;

-

New ways of working:

- The blue dot has gone. I can't tell which discussions I have or haven't read.

Tip by deggie. In the home page of a forum, click to the right of the address bar of your browser, add /content at the end of the URL. Press enter. You will see three options across the page just above the threads: All Content, User Tips and Discussions. Click on Discussions. Threads with new content will have titles that are in bold. Now save that page in your browser bookmarks. For example, my bookmark for the 'Using Apple Support Communities' forum, shows this URL:

https://discussions.apple.com/community/using_apple_support_communities/content? filterID=contentstatus%5Bpublished%5D~objecttype~objecttype%5Bthread%5D

And the view is Bold for unread

Screen Shot 2014-06-22 at 12.20.17 am.png

- The forums keep logging me off after a period of inactivity.

Good. That may stop the spammers posting multiple messages that have nothing to do with the purpose of a forum.

More gains or workarounds, anyone?

Regards,

Ian.

    Hi CCC

I do not know who Norman is?  It's all pretty straightforward and no big deal.

    Hi CC,

    Upper Levelers chime in?

Chiming in. My original post started with these words:

I am starting a discussion on how to make the most of this revised website for Apple Support Communities. Please keep this discussion positive. Please confine  complaints to one of the many negative threads.

CC, you have been a positive help and I value your input. I have added your positive thoughts to updates. Thank you!

However, please stay under the radar and confine your comments to the original question. Then the moderators will be happy. If you have a gripe, please start your own discussion.

    Regards,

    Ian

    Ian,

If I could respond to you, martin from or B C -D in private I surely would, but this is the only way

You said "Here I am chiming in" - by asking experienced folk that may have the ear of the Heavenly Host to chime in, I was (maybe too) subtley asking for back channel talks on the merits of non-secrecy

I didn't start this issue, a mysteriously missing reply post of martin from's did.

martin from claims that he NEVER received an eMail removal notice!! That would have nipped this in the bud!

I am just trying to get this issue to stop. It is hogging valuable positive bandwidth in your very admirable thread.

How do MY comments become the focus instead of the issue? In Project Management 101 we learn not to go down rabbit holes.

    ================

    I told martin from & B C -D this at ±08:30 today:

    ================

I thinlk you should Post a New Discussion asking "What Happened to MY POST?"

    I say this because:

    1. this is now a really long thread - this issue may get lost in here
    2. It will give the folks outside this thread following a place to add their experiences if any - if enough "I have this problem too's" it cant be missed by Hosts

    =================

An ALL positive suggestion. I tried to get them to take the issue elsewhere. Sorry if it didn't work.

Observations of evidence pertinent, conclusions drawn from the evidence and evaluation of the cause of the issue is all part of best practices in Scientific Methodology.

If my causality conclusion - based on evidence - is inadmissible to try to get this off topic stuff stopped, I apologize

my admittedly poor use of language becomes the focus when I state the obvious -- sorry as I can be.

show the remove/edit stuff = problem solved. we wouldn't be having this conversation if that were policy (wouldn't that cure future like problems?)

isn't that a positive thing, solving future problems for your thread and others?

No good deed goes unpunished, I guess

    Again Ian, I apologize -

I will just stay out of something that looks off topic and let the thing run without me trying to get it solved

Briefly: level 6 & above folk get access to what is called the "MVP lounge" here. But we have much less 'back channel' access to the hosts than you might think. They certainly don't discuss any of Apple's policy decisions with us, nor do I think they have any authority to change them. So considering that "constructive" means "serving a useful purpose" it would not be constructive for them to discuss such things with us anyway.

Knowing quite a bit about corporate culture and policy toward what they deem to be trade sensitive info from over these many years, I was not suggesting that they would share with you but that you might share with them.

In another of the "My Stuff" threads, a fellow made what I think is the best summary I have yet to see - in 3 sentences:

If that is your concern, rest assured that there is a very great deal of what might be described as "vigorous" sharing going on in those forums too.

But, for reasons I'm sure you understand, it is mostly a one-way, us-to-them exchange. We have gotten a few, "thanks, we are looking into this" type acknowledgements when we post something about suspected technical bugs or things that clearly don't work as described in the tutorials, & a couple of requests for more info when it isn't clear what we mean, but that's about it.

There are no guarantees but like TT2 said, there is reason to hope for improvements in the coming weeks. There are many indications that they are listening to user feedback & working with the engineers to see what can be done to make ASC as useful to as many users as is possible. Please keep in mind that this is no simple task, since the site needs to support OS X, iOS, & even Windows users, with skill sets from complete newbies to seasoned developers & everything in between.

BTW, on a personal note, I see your location is Dallas TX. I live in the Dallas area too, so someday it isn't inconceivable that we might run into each other somewhere in the Metroplex, most likely in a bar where beer is cheap & the vibes are friendly. If it is in summertime, BOLO for an ugly old geezer with a ponytail but not much hair on top of his head, wearing a Hawaiian shirt, & most likely talking to anybody who will listen about one of three things: the superiority of vintage rock & soul music to anything being produced today, the superiority of microbrews over mass produced American beers, or the superiority of Apple's products compared to the competition. The clincher will be an improbably attractive wife nearby, looking bored & rolling her eyes about my choice of subjects.

Odd isn't it how nearly every reference to any changes that Apple has wrought in the last few years is prefaced with; "Hopefully there will be some improvements…"

An odd thing to say about things that are supposed to be improvements.

There is no doubt the old forum was creaky and breaking under the load and that a new forum was necessary, but really the issues we are nearly all debating are UI design, or the absence thereof.

I have noticed a sharp fall off of posters since the new forum was put in place. I suspect that is due to the clumsiness and obscurity of the new design.

I am trying to roll with the changes, some of which I like such as the cleaner layout, but there is a fundamental feeling that this is a shopping trolley, complete with wonky wheels that won't steer straight. Not being able to see who has updated posts, and which ones I have not responded to, are the principle problems for me. Whilst these are the two (quite) major stumbling blocks to providing support answers, they have been offset by users also giving up on the forum, so there are remarkably fewer questions.

Really the paradigm for all of Apple's current offerings. We have become what DOS used to be. Too many things to cope with, so just give up and do what you can with what you've got.

    Come on chaps. Cheer up.

    Stiff upper lip,

    Grin and bear it,

Just direct your feet to the sunny side of the street,

There's light at the end of the tunnel,

Happy days are here again, the skies of grey are blue again,

There'll be bluebirds over the white cliffs of Dover.

Waaaay off topic. Waiting for the axe .

Hard to know exactly how many bulkheads Apple has managed to breach this time around, but it would be nice if it didn't also stave in the sides of the lifeboats.

Just thinking of the women, children and those poor souls locked below decks!

Well done Ian. User Tip Version 1 of many I trust.

Since one cannot Reply to or Comment on a Tip, is this fine conversation where you intended that Welcome Comments be made?

(Humbly) Am I correct in observing that I had all or part to do with 4 of the 9?

    Hi CCC,

Sorry, I did it hurriedly because this thread was  getting too long. Yes, I shall edit the User Tip to include acknowledgements (not easy when this thread runs to 7 pages and becomes 16+ A4 pages when I copy and paste to Pages).

I have had auto-saved replies come up when clicking on Reply (not as long as your list). It is a bug, (at the moment) but I guess things are pretty hectic with the site upgrade.  I just delete them and continue on.
