Q: "You shut down your computer because of a problem" error on every login

OS X 10.9.3

User has message every time she logs in:

Screen Shot 2014-06-24 at 2.14.59 PM.JPG

She had a few kernel panics yet I couldn't find them in Console in the normal spot, so I went searching for them.

I found them in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports and they weren't helpful to me.

I then found the following when looking through logs (ReportPanic could not stat):

JG-Kernel-Error.JPG

I searched and tried the answers I found and none worked.

Such as:

Re: getting startup message "You shut down your computer because of a problem" when no problem existed prior to sit down

annoying message "you shut down your computer because of a problem"

http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/70765/why-does-my-mbp-say-it-was-restar ted-because-of-a-problem

Any help removing this error message on login would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Do any of the indicated panic reports exist? If so, post the contents of one.

Try to boot in safe mode. If you can, remove the useless Norton/Symantec product by following the instructions on either of these pages:

Uninstalling your Norton product for Mac

    Removing Symantec programs for Macintosh

If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different. Back up all data before making any changes.

Its a corporate base install that has Symantec Endpoint Protection as directed by our Director of IT.

I can remove it for testing yet it will need to be re-added.  Do you think this will cause further issues?

    Thanks.

If you remove it and put it back, you won't be any worse off than you are now.

FWIW, if I had a Director of IT, then I'd hand this whole problem over to IT to solve — just as soon as IT is mandating these sorts of add-on installs, they're also inherently owning the troubleshooting of bugs and crashes and other weirdnesses.

I am in IT working on a user account.  I have never seen an error every time user logs in, and the fixes I have found don't work in my situation so I reached out for assistance.

I don't see it being the SEP as we have 50+ installs running and this is the first user with issues, yet I'm willing to try anything to resolve.

Add-on anti-malware software has a long history of destabilizing and even of corrupting systems, and variously also provides a path for infections.

Remove it.    Reboot using Safe Mode and shut down. Test.

FWIW, if you look at what the anti-malware tools actually do, they're very difficult to distinguish from what the actual malware does in terms of how both hook themselves into an OS X or Windows system, how they try to secure themselves, and how the anti-malware packages themselves have increasingly become ripe targets for various malware attacks.    Malware has gotten quite good at evading anti-virus solutions, too — as a Symantec rep has stated.

I completely understand.  It's not my decision.  A few of the latest SEP releases address some of the Mac issues - for example not using java to run their updater and offering more granular settings from manager...  Symantec support has been very helpful in navigating the pitfalls associated with issues related to the Mac OS.

User just had another kernel panic today prior to me removing SEP (I have since removed SEP while troubleshooting latest kernel panic).

I submitted report to Apple to try and get rid of the error message from my original post.  It worked on one reboot - when user logged in the message did not pop up, yet after another reboot AFTER I uninstalled SEP, the message reappeared.  So SEP was not causing the error message to pop up at login.

Here is the latest kernel panic (prior to removing SEP):

The Symantec product is worse than useless, and worse than the imaginary "viruses" that it wouldn't protect you from even if they really existed. Symantec has admitted as much. If your "director of IT" doesn't know that, then he's incompetent. The IT industry is a refuge for incompetents like him. If you're not going to remove the Symantec product, then there's really nothing more to discuss. You'll have to live with a permanently crippled system.

I have uninstalled SEP and the issue remains where "You shut down your computer because of a problem" window pops up at login.

I only want to get rid of that error.

Maybe this has something to do with it?:

    Thanks for any further assistance.

Have you booted into Safe Mode, and then rebooted normally again?  That clears out the boot caches.

As for the panics, yes, kernel panics are a good trigger for reboot problems; the "ReportPanic[248]: ReportPanic could not stat {some file} has been reported before, but there's likely no specific cause for it.  The full names of those are has been unfortunately truncated in that image, so I can't tell if they're old cruft, or something that's happening each time.   Try booting the recovery partition or an external disk and use Disk Utility to perform a volume repair and a repair permissions pass.

Also obviously see what's in one or two of those panics, and check the protections and ownership on the panic files referenced.

I'll reboot in safe mode.  I haven't done that yet.

The 5 ReportPanic could not stat errors in the screenshot are from 2 panics.  One is at the beginning of this thread (Kernel_2014-06-20-121620_HLC1216.panic).  The second I didn't get, yet I can if needed.

I have repaired drive and permissions from recovery partition a few times, yet I will again for good measure.  I have also repaired user directory permissions just for fun.

Can you tell me what the permissions should be for the panic files?  user r/w admin group r/w is what I have on another test machine.

    Thanks.

Please post a panic report post removal of SEP.
