Q: How to get label colors back on Maverick?

I realize "tabs" took it's place but all my business files are predicated on a carefully organized color file system. This was an awful decision for some of us. Any new apps to fill the void?

I trust this solves this for all of you once and for all. Did I mention it is free? Yes. Great.

I tried XtraFinder a few weeks ago but tossed it because of one critical flaw it had:  its implementation of the 'coloring' extended the selection sensitivity area to encompass the entire area of the "Name" column (i.e., the blank area after the name text, in List view).  That meant I could no longer click down and drag to multi-select.  The loss of that was actually worse (for me) than the loss of coloring.  Have they now fixed that?

I'm using TotalFinder which, for me, does everything I've needed.  No problems with TF for these several weeks.

You're quite right. I hadn't noticed the bug in XtraFinder. I've reported it to the developer. Hopefully something is done about it soon.

Thanks for the confirmation.  If they every do fix it (or if you hear back from the developer), could you please let us know here?  Thanks again!

Sure. Hopefully I'll hear back from him this coming week.

I'll endeavour to post a message here if/when the bug is resolved.

Keriah... The latest version of Xtrafinder fixes the bug you were bugged by.

0.21 does not have this issue. Of course, if you've already paid for TotalFinder, then Xtrafinder may be redundant for you (as a free option).
But anyone else reading this... install XtraFinder and be free of your woes about Apple royally stuffing up the way Tags/labels are handled in terms of coloring display.

Thanks for the update.  While, yes, I have a paid copy of TF (and am quite happy with it) I'm also happy to hear that XtraFinder is so responsive.  When it comes time to upgrade other Mac's in the family they may opt for XF.

I prefer XtraFinder because it feels more integrated into the OSX experience.

TotalFinder feels like a slightly different OS bolted on to OSX. That's fine if you want that, but I prefer XF because it feels like minor corrections to OSX rather than a new app/OS.

What a dope LOL.  If you don't have something useful to add, maybe you should just shut-up

Can Pathfinder or any of these other 3rd party finder apps somehow be used to change Finder?  AppleCare rep said he thought so but (as usual) did not know how/.

Go to their developers site and try reading what they say. They are third party apps, not Apple apps. XtraFinder , pathfinder, etc etc have been suggested and links given hundreds of times through these threads on the topic. One constant is that they are not in OSX anymore. So whinging in this and similar threads is pretty useless if you have not read through them properly and seen the many many alternatives given over the past months.

    Cheers

    Pete

Help me out, I am trying to find the useful things you have added and I can't. Please point to something useful posted by you.

Csound, and others new to this discussion.

Just take a look a few posts up. It's all spelt out for you.

To repeat... one option... for free... which I use and recommend... install Xtrafinder, and activate the XtraFinder preference to turn on "Legacy label color painting"

Full instructions on this solution are available here: http://bit.ly/1jBfoQF

    Enough said.

InspiredLife and others very new to this discussion.

I have no problem with coloured labels and am in no need of extra anything. I suggest that you read this thread, it will help you know the players.

    Sorry Csound. My mistake.

I had wrongly assumed your issue was related to the original topic that Herbert17 started this discussion with.

Again, my error. Unfortunately I don't have the time or inclination to dig any further back than I have in order to figure out exactly when you entered the discussion, and what exactly your particular issue was. I've gone back four or more pages in search of that. But's that's all I have time for.

I wish you all the best with whatever it is you wanted to resolve.

Very late answer but this free app helps out (next to other useful features like auto column size): http://www.trankynam.com/xtrafinder/
