See requirements for AirPrint and printers that support AirPrint here:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356

If your printer supports AirPrint but does not work then:

Your printer might need a firmware update

Your printer must be on the same WiFi network

Your router must support Bonjour (Zero-configuration networking).

    Troubleshooting:

Turn Off iPad, WiFi router (remove from power), and Printer (remove from power).

    Turn on WiFi router

    Wait 30 seconds

    Turn on printer

    Wait 30 seconds

    Turn on iPad

    Try to print.

If you need more help then what model printer do you have?

You connect your Airprint printer to the same WiFi network that you are using your iPad on. See the instructions that came with your printer for how to do this.

The HP 2540 is a Wireless Direct Printer.

Setup Wireless Direct Printer (this printer generate it's own Wi-Fi)

    On Printer

    1. Turn on HP wireless direct from the printer’s control panel.

    On iPad

    2. Settings>Wi-Fi>Look for printer>Connect to the HP wireless direct network.

    3. Start printing without wires

You do not have to use the wireless direct feature of this printer. It will function when connected to a normal WiFi router.

See the instructions for how to setup the printer connection to a WiFi router on page 49 of the user guide here: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03847745.pdf

This setup is preferable since if one has the printer generate another WiFi network you will have to disconnect from your normal local network to use the printer network. This can be problematic on the iPad.
