Do you see the printer in System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Print?
laptop not updated and can still print
Just in case, check to which OS X is installed on your Mac ?
Click the Apple () menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac.
The version is noted there.

MacbookPro still has 10.9.3.
It doesn't show up until I try to add it.
It then shows up in the nearby printers list.
When I try to connect it tells me software is currently unavailable. Conact manufacturer for latest software.
It is the latest and stlll works with 10.9.3

When I try to connect it tells me software is currently unavailable. Conact manufacturer for latest software.
Even though it shows up in the printers list, go to the Canon website. Download drivers for your model printer for v10.9.
Then open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Print then click +
