Q: Mail rules not working...

I have set a mail rule to mark all messages as read.  This rule will only work if I force it to apply (Cmd +A to select all then right click apply rules).  The messages show as read on Mail, but when I view the same account on my ipad they still show as being unread.  Is this a Mavericks problems?

I am still having lots of problems getting mail to apply rules.  Someone has suggested that it only works on new mail.  Very confused.  It works sometimes and doesnt at other times.

I am using Gmail

MacBook Pro, iOS 7.0.3

None of the previous solutions worked for me, or they weren't applicable, however I did find a workaround to get this error resolved.

Essentially I had "Mark as Read" put into a rule that was also in charge of moving a message. Even when I said to "Mark as Read" first, it wasn't marking the message read.

I fixed this by moving "Mark as Read" into its own separate rule, and moving that rule to the top of the Rules queue (which was otherwise entirely empty-- everyone else's suggestion of removing the "News from Apple" rule didn't apply to me). So now I have rules to move messages start after they've been "Marked as Read," rather than have them combined.

This solution works for me, however this doesn't change the fact that as far as I'm concerned, this is a bug that needs to be addressed.

My rules had been fine until this morning, when they stopped working also.

I, too, had deleted the "News from Apple" rule long ago, so that wasn't the issue; however, I was able to fix this by duplicating the rule, deleting the orginal, and renaming the copy. Seems OK now.

I found that my rule didn't get applied until I selected the messages (open all messages folder then did Command + A) then from menu > Message > Apply Rules.

Worked fine after that... Hope that helps

I am having the same problem.  I have a rule to automatically delete emails from a specific sender.  It does not work.  When I go into the rules via preferences and click 'apply'..the message then disappears...kind of useless eh?

I have multiple non-gmail accounts that have issues now.  It works, then it doesn't.  It's screwed up.  And Smart Mailboxes don't follow rules.

They broke some serious stuff recently, and many people are seeing it.

    Cheers

My issue is this: I have a rule that any paypal notification I get for an incoming payment is supposed to change the color of the background (this works 100% of the time), flags the message (this works 100% of the time) and then runs an apple script that detects the sender's email address from the body of the email and sends an auto responder with a custom subject . This works 1% of the time. But usually works if I manually apply the rule again. How could it apply only 2 out of the 3 actions?

It sounds like Mail.app is pooched.  See if Yosemite works for you.

I use Gmail IMAP with Mac Mail. Create a rule that move mails older than 7 days to a personal mailox. Simply does not run automatically. I select 'Apply Rules' then it works. Can this rule be run automatically?

    Thanks

It's supposed to be automatic.  Mail.app has major bugs.

Over a year since the problem emerged and still no solution from Apple....?

Maybe they should fix mavericks before focusing on yosemite...

Seen this on superuser and cnet and it works for me:

Add the rule condition "Every message" and (not any) your rule, then read messages will be handled as well.

    Thanks Falux.

So if my current rule is:

if all of the confitions are met

Date Received is greater than 31 days old

    Perform

    Move Message to mailbox Archive

I should only add the 'Every message' condition?

Or do I need to do something else?

    Thanks in advance
