Q: iPhone 4 doesn't ring, only vibrates, but speakers work.

My iPhone 4 (AT&T) suddenly won't ring when someone calls or I get a text, it only vibrates. The speakers play music fine, and I can have phone conversations and hear/speak to the other person fine. Also, the alarm clock sounds The mute switch doesn't seem jammed or anything, but when I switch it off, it doesn't show the picture of the bell with the line through it while vibrating to let me know its off. Also, the volume buttons get no response when pressed. Any ideas?

    Excellent HoustonianK,

After trying all the other solutions - like switch off the mute button and/ increase the ringer volume -  your solution worked instantly.

    Cheers

    Fantastic Houstoniank

Worked fantastically for me as well. I think that the comment re the upgrade to the latest iOS may indeed have something to do with it as I just upgraded in the past week or so and issue materialised after a subsequent power down and power up.

I spent a couple of frustrating hours doing virtually ALL of the above suggestions without any of them working.

Then FINALLY, as last resort, I went into Settings and Volume Control and TURNED OFF the "CHANGE WITH BUTTONS" feature which meant that touching the external volume buttons would no longer work.  The moment I did that, the phone ringer worked!

It makes no sense to me WHY this worked, but it did!

So thought I'd add this to the 'arsenal' of things to try.

I had the the no sound issue also on my iPhone.  I found this trick to solve the problem and it give back all sound on any iPhone.

    1- Go to Settings

    2- General

3- Scroll down to : Accessibility

4- Select Assistive touch (for more information about Using AssistiveTouch on your iOS device : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5587)

5- If the "White dot" doesn't appear - Click 3 times to the home bottom and you should get the "White dot" somewhere on your iPhone sceen (you can move the "White dot" where you want on the screen of the iPhone)

6- When you get the "White dot" - click on it

7- You will have 4 icons, click on the device icon

8- Click volume up (be sure the volume is at the maximum)

9- Click on the little bell (make sure the bell is not muted - I found, it's not very clear whic bell is on or wich bell is mute)

10- Call your iPhone - the problem of no sound should be fix (if the problem is not not fix be sure the volume is up and the bell is not muted - select the other bell by clicking on the bell -  call again your iPhone - the problem should be solve and it should work)

11- If you do not like to keep the "White dot" on your iPhone screen - click 3 times to the home bottom and the "White dot" should disappear (if you want it back - click 3 times to the home bottom and the "White dot" should be back)

I found this trick at :  http://www.iphonefaq.org/archives/972122 -  My iPhone ring/silent switch is stuck on mute, how can I turn on sound? - On the comments of " hi iphone users i have had " Submitted by jodray (on February 5, 2013 - 10:05am.

Hoping it will work for you.   Best regards.

Thank you so much for this! It helped me help my father in law with his phone. Apple did a great thing putting in this back door.

That did it, pulled my hair out for two days trying to figure out why, after following step by step instructions, I returned everything to original positions- Problem solved. My phone was received two days ago from an online purchase. I thought I got burned. Mine failed just after plugging it into my Tacoma radio so I could listen to Pandora in my truck so glitch may have something t do with headphones/speaker software. Thanks again, you saved the day!!
