Q: aperture to.....

My wife uses Aperture to manage her photos. She moved from iPhoto because she felt that iPhoto could not do what she wanted. It was set up stock. She does not use a managed library (whatever that is). I get to support all the tech in our house. Should everything get moved back into iPhoto? If so how would you do that and keep the events/projects organized. It would even be great to keep the masters and the current edited versions in place. I know that no one has a crystal ball here, but I need to find a way for her to continue doing stuff with her photos. She does take some (very few) pictures on her phone, most are taken with a DSLR. She does put some of them on her iPad to use to paint from. Having used Apple products for more years than I can count, I need to have a way to put her stuff into a more standard (????) system so if necessary to go to a non Apple product she can. All advice is very appreciated.

    First:

Don't do anything. Aperture will be updated for Yosemite. That means that the app will continue to work as it does now for a minimum of 18 months. It may work with later versions of the OS too, but at the very least there is no reason to change anything at this time.

    Second.

Photos app will turn up sometime next year. It will migrate her Library when she tries it out. Wait and see what that brings. If - at that point - the new app does not meet her needs, that's the time to make a big change.

    Third:

You can export everything you put into Aperture out again, in a variety of formats. There's no such thing as a standard system. You can easily relocate her masters if you so choose, it's all there in the commands.

So, no hurry and no panic. Lots of time to consider your options.

Thanks Terence. I will take your advice. I personally do not use Aperture so you insight is invaluable. If I could continue this question,

Please explain a little bit on the export. A link to the users manual will do fine if you don't want to give me the executive summary. :-) Currently, we use the Vault and I use ChronoSync to backup the masters to both Time Capsule and a third USB drive. We also use Time Machine.

None of which are exporting, and all of which are backing up.

Just my .02 of course, but I consider that the most important backup is a one-time backup of original images that should occur before image files are touched by any images-management app (other than the Finder).

Allen, I doubt if that was every done. Some of the very old original images have been burned to DVD's. The newer images (masters) (I cannot say if they have been touched) are backed upped to 2 different locations daily. I actually pull the images from inside the Aperture package and they get copied to both a Time Capsule and a stand alone USB drive. I do not actually use Aperture myself, the wife does. I don't think backup is in her vocabulary :-).

Try "File > Export as PDF" in Safari, or "File > Print".

You can set Aperture to back up the originals on Import automatically. Use the "Backup location" brick in the "ImportSettings" panel.

Leonie, thanks very much. I have changed the import settings for her and we will see what that does. System doesn't let me give you any points but here they are anyway. Also sorry about not putting the accent over your name. Don't know how to do on an English keyboard.
