Q: what can I use to open old apple works documents?

I have a bunch of older documents created using AppleWorks. I need to access some of these but am unable to open any using, Microsoft office, AppleScript editor or anything else. When I select a file that says its a "AppleScript Editor document" I get an error message saying that

"could not be opened. AppleScript Editor cannot open files in the “AppleScript Editor Document” format." So how can I get into these documents?

Help please.

Thanks

Tom

Possibility A: old hardware + old OS + old apps

Possibility B: virtual machine + old OS + old apps

"VMware Fusion" or "Parallels Desktop for Mac" allow you to create virtual machines. You'd also have to purchase "old OS" and "old apps" if you don't have them already. Check which versions of "old OS" and "old apps" you'd need and if they are compatible with the virtualization solutions.

IWORK - Pages, Keynote, Numbers should open Letters, presentations, and spreadsheets.

If you created any databases and/or artwork - you have to open them in Appleworks and save them as CSV files.

When I discovered the artwork issue I tried a copy Of MACLINKPLUS   I had that converts files from/to windows - but it did not work with from appleworks to IWORK. or other stuff.

Unfortunately both Apple and Microsoft seem to forget that people may have files created and saved just in case using older software.

In the case of pictures and databases I finally put the old mac together, fired it up and did the export to CSV.

If you have iWork '09 or earlier they will open AppleWorks 6 word processing, spreadsheets & presentations in Pages, Numbers & Keynote respectively. You cannot open any other type (draw, paint or database) of AppleWorks 6 documents with any iWork application nor can you open AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks documents. The latest versions of the iWork apps will not open any AppleWorks files.

You can try the latest version of LibreOffice.
