Q: Can't deactivate iMessage after switching phones?

I bought an Android phone tonight, replacing my iPhone.  I also ported my number to the new phone.  However, now, anytime someone with an iPhone tries to SMS me, their phone automatically sends it as an iMessage, which I can't receive, since I no longer use my iPhone.  How do I deactivate my phone number with iMessage so that I can start receiving text messages from my iOS-using friends again?

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.0.1

Just switched from iphone to a droid.  It seems to me that if someone else's phone "thinks" mine is an iphone it sends it as an imessage, which seems to be verified by this:

Last night I got a tip that so far seems to do the trick.  Ask your iphone-using contacts to send you a text, double tapping "send."  On the second tap, they will be asked if they want to send as a text message (as opposed to imessage, I guess); they should tap "yes."  I might not have all the correct terminology on the question, but both people who have tried it have successfully sent messages to my new phone.
