Q: Thunderbolt Display will not wake up after sleep!!!!!!

It seems like a lot of us are having an issue with the THUNDERBOLT DISPLAY opening after it goes to sleep.  I have the display connected to a new mac mini server and I can not get it to wake up after it goes to sleep unless I unplug the power or the thunderbolt cable and then plug it back in.

My setup has been a MacBook Pro Retina with two daisy chained Thunderbolt Displays.

    • The firmware of #1:  Firmware Version:          22,2
    • The firmware of #2:  Firmware Version:          26,2

but the order of the displays doesn't matter. If the MacBook Pro went into sleep mode for a longer period, waking up one of the display often didn't work

I connected the two Displays to my new Mac Pro 2013 again daisy chained and had exactly the same issue. I doubt it has anything to do with the Firmware of the computer. I'd rather say it has something to do with the differences in firmware of the displays.

In regards of the power quality: All of my displays are connected to an APC UPS with highest quality power outlets - all grounded. The Mac Pro is connected to the same UPS.

Please check, if you also have discrepances in your firmware (About This Mac > System Report > Thunderbolt)

I'd like to test what happens if I diectly connect the displays, but the Thunderbolt cord is rather short to allow this with my setup.

    Thx

Thank you for this comment! I have a new retina macbook pro and a dell U2713HM 27" (with a displayport connection). When I connected the macbook pro to the dell via a mini displayport -> displayport cable, the dell would immediately go into power save mode, though the macbook could see the display and believed the two were connected successfully. It connected fine over mini displayport -> dvi and mini displayport -> hdmi, though then I only got 1080p resolution instead of the full 2560x1440.

The fix for me, inspired by your comment, was to unplug my monitor from the surge protector and plug it directly into the wall. Success! The two still connect correctly without sleep issues even though I've now plugged the monitor back into the surge protector again. Thank you so much!

Read my earlier post. I'm 100% convinced it's the power going into the display that's the issue (though Apple really should make it less touchy). Try a new power bar, wall socket, anything. Your problem sounds very similar to what I was experiencing. To fix it I plug the display into a new powerbar (the old one was from the dollar store) AND I moved my Kinect over to a different wall socket. You likely don't have a Kinect but you may have a cheap powerbar or some gadget plugged into the same socket that's messing with the current flow(?) (I'm not an electrision).

I thought that I'd post that I solved my issue by accident.   I changed the background image in both my laptop and thunderbolt display and after that the Thunderbolt now wakes up.   I can't see why it made a difference but it's working now and I hope it stays that way.

i have been having the same problem for months... just got of the phone with a senior advisor for apple support how said that they are aware of the problem and they suggest that you have the keyboard connected to the laptop not the display via a usb cable... so far it has worked for me... i have a usb keyboard that previously was connected to the display... ( i also have a bluetooth mouse and trackpad) i am curious if this helps anybody else out there...

ps i changed my desktop image before speaking with apple and it didnt help me...

After trying everything on this board and everything Apple support told me to do, the only permanent solution I found was to prevent my laptop from ever falling asleep.  (and why should it!)

System Preferences -> Energy Saver (2nd row) -> slide slider to "Never" on "Computer sleep."

Ironically, you don't need to set the "Display Sleep" to "Never"  You can still allow the "Display" to sleep after whatever amount of minutes and it will wake up with no problems, As long as the computer itself doesn't sleep.

    Good luck..

I had the sleep problem with my MacBook Pro and the Thunderbolt Display as well.

The Solution I found... I bought another Thunderbolt cable and plugged that into the screen, and the computer (instead of the original screen cable). That worked. Computer goes to and wakes from sleep, no reset to Laptop screen only and disconnect.

Funny thing though was - Now also if I use the original cable (the screencable) it works. As long as the other thunderbolt is plugged into the screen, even with out going anywhere else.

Very bizarre. Certainly a faulty Screen / screen logic board / thunderbolt driver... but it works.

    Stefan.

Having this problem as well. sometimes I can get it to start up again by unplugging it, restarting my computer and disconnecting and reconnecting it in various orders, but nothing seems to consistantly get it to kick back in. Tried turning off the auto brightness and it seemed to work for about a day and then back to this nonsense. This Monitor is definitly not worth the stress its been causing.

Does a representative from apple ever reply to issues here? 3 years and no posted solution from apple or update to fix the issue? it would be nice if they would at least acknowledge that their product has an issue and maybe do something to resolve it. I'm losing faith in apple as a company and this is really not helping matters.

It's ridiculous that Apple still has no fix for this. Bought the TBD 2 years ago, and have been having this problem for about a year now. Tried upgrading to the lastes OSX, using a dedicated well grounded power outlet, but it all doesn't help. It even happens when I connect it to a Windows PC with Thunderbolt, so it's definitely a bug in the display. Ironic how the problem never popped up until the guarantee had expired...

Apple, do something, fix it! Help us loyal customers while we're still loyal!

It turned out my issue was being caused because of a faulty thunderbolt cable. If I bent the cable at different directions it eventually got the signal and started up. Unfortunately, apple decided to make this cable built in so it's not as simple as ordering a replacement. Luckily my display was still under warrantee so they fixed it for free ( although lugging that thing too and from the store was a pain ) but it would have cost over $100 otherwise.

I posted on this thread earlier with the same conclusion. Replacement of the TBD cable at the Apple Store solved the problem permanently. Luckily, my TBD was under warranty and the replacement was free.

Stephen, I had the same issue about a year ago. I took my screen into the Apple store and they swapped out the TBD cable also. It fixed the issue, however, when I upgraded to mavericks, I am having trouble getting the display to wake.

    Same issue.

I took the display to Apple and they replaced the Thunderbolt Display's logic board. Here I am two days after I picked it up and the issue is already back. I've got another appointment at the Apple Store this weekend. I'll suggest the TBD cable this time. Hopefully they can fix it for good.
