Jul 3, 2014 10:18 AM in response to joevtby orrbain,Here's a screenshot of the resolution that's working for me in the utility:
I also did the "Export EDID" thing in case that helps:

Jul 3, 2014 11:33 AM in response to orrbainby joevt,Orrbain, the EDID you posted is the same as the other PB287/28a2 EDIDs (except for the serial number).
Below is a 50 Hz, non-CVT-RB override for the PB287/28a2. The EDID editor I used wouldn't allow 444.40 MHz so I went with 444.410 MHz. I removed the serial number.
Path: /System/Library/Displays/Overrides/DisplayVendorID-469/DisplayProductID-28a2
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>DisplayProductID</key> <integer>10402</integer> <key>DisplayVendorID</key> <integer>1129</integer> <key>IODisplayEDID</key> <data>AP///////wAEaaIoAAAAABAYAQSlPiJ4Ohy1o1dPoCcNUFSjCADRwIFAgYCVALMAgcABAQEBma0AoPBwPoAwWIoAbVUhAAAaBHQAMPJwWoCwWIoAbVUhAAAaAAAA/QAeUBigPAQRAPD4OPA8AAAA/ABBU1VTIFBCMjg3CiAgAbICAydxTwECAxESEwQUBR+QDg8dHiMJFweDAQAAagMMABAAAHggAACMCtCKIOAtEBA+lgBtVSEAABgBHQByUdAeIG4oVQBtVSEAAB4BHQC8UtAeILgoVUBtVSEAAB6MCtCQIEAxIAxAVQBtVSEAABgAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA6w==</data> </dict> </plist>

Jul 3, 2014 11:47 AM in response to joevtby orrbain,Awesome! That worked! Including with the scaled resolutions! Hooray!
And honestly I can't detect much of a difference between 50hz and 60hz (except of course that there's no annoying artifacts on the right-hand side of the screen), but going from 30 up to 50 is a big improvement! So this will definitely help tide me over until Apple can come out with an official fix. I'll check back in a few days and let everyone know if it works well long-term.
Thanks so much for all your help @joevt! Much appreciated.

Jul 3, 2014 12:20 PM in response to joevtby Kremmel,Worked great this last fix, i don't know what happened that caused me to mislabel the files when i edited. Either way i now have 50Hz 4k working, thank you for all the help with this. Hopefully apple fixes this problem soon but until then 50Hz works fine i guess.

Jul 3, 2014 5:39 PM in response to orrbainby orrbain,Well after using it for about half a day, there are still some issues. It seems like after using it for a while, things start to develop random artifacts, and especially after the display has been asleep it has a lot of issues where I have to unplug and plug it back in to reset things. So it's not a perfect fix. I don't think playing with it on our end is going to make it any better than this though, so I'll just cross my fingers and hope that at least someone at Apple has this on their radar...

Jul 4, 2014 12:56 AM in response to orrbainby dmolrub,Are you positive your cable is Displayport 1.2 compliant? This is the description for the one I have: "The 20-pin Mini-DisplayPort is DisplayPort 1.2 compliant / HDCP 1.3 and 21.6 Gbps of bandwidth. The maximum resolution supported is 4096 x 2160 @ 60Hz."
Specially, I think the bandwidth is of great importance.
I bring that up because @Laseyman reported horizontal artifacts on his Samsung as you did, and that seems to be the only difference between our setups by now. I´ve been using graphics software and playing videos flawlessly with the Lenovo cable for 2 days now, no artifacts at all...

Jul 4, 2014 6:40 AM in response to dmolrubby orrbain,Maybe that's it. I'll order the same cable you have and give that a try. Thanks!

Jul 4, 2014 6:56 AM in response to orrbainby orrbain,I wasn't able to find the Lenovo cable you mentioned anywhere but I did find this one on Newegg: http://www.accellcables.com/products/ultraav-mini-displayport-to-displayport-1-2 -cable
So I'll try that and let you know how it goes after I receive it.

Jul 8, 2014 1:10 PM in response to orrbainby orrbain,The new cable did indeed fix the problem. Hooray!

Jul 8, 2014 1:49 PM in response to orrbainby Laseyman,Aha, yes, must be the problem: I bought the StarTech.com Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort Adapter Cable - M/M - DisplayPort cable - 2 m, only supports data-transfer rates of up to 8.64Gbps, having a look at a few 1.2 compliant and even some don't have the top bandwidth of the ones you have listed, so I'll definitely get one that does at a later date.
Cheers.

Jul 11, 2014 4:16 AM in response to orrbainby pacioccone,This solution worked for me as well! Fantastic!
I gave Apple Care an earful about this yesterday, sent them the bug numbers and the link to the thread.
I'm happy I found this post.
Now, Apple, fix this issue!

I'm hoping someone can confirm that using a DisplayPort 1.2 compliant cable fixes this tearing on the right hand side of the screen on the Samsung U28D590 on Late 2013 Mac Pro (AMD FirePro D500)? I'm stumped why my existing cable works fine with my Late 2013 MBP on this very display.
You need a good Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort 1.2 cable AND you need to use the custom EDID / timings that have been discussed from page 6 onwards in this thread.

Jul 15, 2014 12:57 PM in response to orrbainby titan66,Does anybody know a reliable seller to buy this cable (6 foot length -- B143B-007J) and actually has stock?
http://www.accellcables.com/products/ultraav-mini-displayport-to-displayport-1-2 -cable
Everywhere I have looked does not have stock and are unable to provide an ETA.

Jul 15, 2014 1:02 PM in response to titan66by pacioccone,I purchased mine through Amazon and it took about 7 days to receive them. I have 2 extras that I purchased from Staples. If you'd like to buy them from me, I can ship them to you, you can pay the shipping cost and cost of the wires.
