Q: How to configure vnc with specific resolution

I have a Mac mini which is normally connected to an old monitor displaying 1280x1024.  On this I have installed RealVNC server, the free version, which I am willing to replace with something else or upgrade to the paid-for version if necessary.

I also have a HP4540s laptop, from which I would like to connect to my Mac mini.  The screen on this laptop is 1366x768.  I would like to be able to connect to the server on my Mac mini from my laptop such that the laptop shows the content on the Mac mini full screen in its natural format, and not 1280x1024 with scroll bars.  In other words I would like the laptop to connect to the mini server as if it were a separate monitor, with different characteristics from the real monitor.

Can this be done?  I have seen threads here and elsewhere which indicate that it can, but the instructions have not been clear enough for me to be able to make it work.  If it can be done, I would be very grateful for a detailed guide on how to do it.

I suppose the other alternative would be to buy a new monitor for the mini with the same screen ratio as the laptop, but I'd prefer not to have to spend so much money.  What I'm basically looking for, I guess, is something similar to server software on the mini.

Remote Desktop Server can be setup on the PC, and Microsoft has Remote Desktop client.

Here are some software solutions which may work for you:

Thanks, AB but none of these solutions fits my problem.  They all relate to using a Mac to connect to a PC (or in one case another Mac), with the assumption that the PC is running Windows.

In my case I want to connect from a linux box (running Ubuntu) to a Mac mini.  The Mac is running a monitor with 1280x1024 resolution.  I want to connect to the Mac mini from my Ubuntu box, which has a natural resolution of 1366x768 and see a screen image in that resolution, without scroll bars  In other words, I don't want to see a 1280x1024 screen on my 1366x768 laptop.  I want to be able to run the applications on my Mac mini but see the results in my Ubuntu box.

I'm actually thinking of paying the 20 bucks to upgrade my Mac mini to OSX server edition, and connect from the Ubuntu box to that, with a separate resolution.  I just wonder whether there is a Ubuntu app which will function as a client of a Mac.
