Q: apple tv - no airplay

Apple TV (black version) with 6.2 software (June 2014).  Iphone 4 with 6.1.3 was fine a few weeks ago but now no more airplay - no sign of the button on iphone in Music/Videos/You Tube app/ iPhoto etc...

Does this statement (from Apple TV software 6.1):

"Adds a security option to require that iOS devices or Macs be verified with a one-time, onscreen code before using AirPlay. Requires iOS 7.1 or later on an iOS device or a Mac with Mac OS X 10.9.2 or later"

mean Apple TV no longer supports Airplay for older iphones?

I don't believe that would be possible as per the terms below. I know this is the case for basic airplay, i've never tested mirroring to be sure.

    • If you download a rented movie on your iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV: It is not transferable to any other device or computer.

    As I said above

"You need to get a report via istumbler (Mac) or netstumbler (PC) to see the signal for the network as well as any noise detected. You can also try ethernet, as suggested, to help rule out a wifi issue."

Thanks again!  I thought that turning on "home sharing" would let me share any purchases/rentals between the Apple TV and iPad.  My misunderstanding.

But that aside, I still hope I'm able to figure out how to get my AirPlay icon back.  My modem and TV are in different rooms, so operating through anything other than wifi is somewhere between difficult and impossible.

Thanks again for your help, Andrew.

    No problem!

Home sharing has nothing to do with iPad. It is for sharing contents from your computer. If you had rented on your computer then you would be able to stream to ATV.

If the router/modem is a fare distance from your TV/ATV (or in another room) then that could impact performance and cause issues like this, typically based on interference.

Thanks for your help, as you suggested I powered down the wifi and left it powered down for 5 mins, and unplugged the Apple Tv, too.

Then I restarted the wifi and then restarted the Apple TV. The Airplay Icon is back on my iPad 2.

As you said, just because other things were working, the reset (and leaving it off for 30 seconds or more) was needed.

So, Thanks again for posting your suggestions, much appreciated.

My problem is fixed, thanks to Vazandrew's suggestions.

When i was troubleshooting before I did not leave the wifi off long enough. And I didn't wait long enough for it to come all the way back on. (I think.)

MY Airplay icon is back now on my iPad 2.

That's good news!  I didn't get to try that suggestion last night, but will do so tonight.  So glad that there is a possible quick and easy solution.

My router and wifi and ATV are all powered down over night - so a good 9 hours rest! But still no joy here. Tried all but istumbler

OK, Got istumbler (98) on my macbook (osx10.5.8):

    Airport:

    Secure / managed / network name / signal 63% /noise 12% / Chann 2 / MAC address / Vendor / Sample: 124 / updated: now, today / freq: 2417

Also have 5G signal from the same Netgear 600 router (but cant use 5G on iphone 4):

    Same as above but

    Signal 58% to 61%/ Chann 0/ Sample 186/ freq -1

There are 7 other WiFi signals in range but with strengths 23 to 30%

    Any ideas?

You have a lot of interference on the network. Is the network encrypted?  If not, those other networks can impact performance. The distance, as mentioned earlier will contribute to this as it requires a further range and likely has to go through walls etc. Wireless appliances and electronic devices nearby are another factor.

You can try tweaking settings and changing channels on the router (refer to manual).

Well, I tried unplugging my modem and my Apple TV (again) for a half hour. No luck.  My airplay icon is still MiA. I give up.

Have you tried getting a report of your network? What are the results?

Just in case other suggestions have not worked, this worked for me.  Turns out it was the firmware on my wireless router.  Go to your router settings and make sure you're up to date, then restart your apple tv and/or apple device.

thibsy, when you say 'Go to your router settings and make sure you're up to date' - is this as simple as unplugging your wireless router for a while?

I mean go to your wireless router's home page on your internet browser (192.168.1.1...you'll have to use your login credentials).  Somewhere on your router's site it should give you the firmware version your router is using.  Hopefully, there is also a link that will check to see if your firmware is up to date.  If there isn't a link, you can search the web for your router's current firmware (and how to install it if necessary).  Twice my apple tv was not communicating with my apple devices and both times, after updating the firmware on my router, the problem was fixed.  Don't know if it will work for you but it's worth a shot.
