Jan 2, 2013 5:53 PM in response to BrendanfromQLDby ctrudeau,Hello.
Had this same problem. Only showed computer and settings. Tried everything. What worked in the end was not location or restart, but you need to do a full Apple TV reset from the settings menu. Re input your wifi data, go through the set up process...takes maybe five min max, then your good to go.
I'm in Canada so unsure if that makes a diff. Computers are not my strong suit. But this problem happened three times for me since Christmas. It su@ks but it solves the problem.
Apple please fix this one.
Cheers all!
Christofer

Sep 26, 2013 9:02 AM in response to BrendanfromQLDby Kstew3,I was reading through this thread, as I had a similar problem (3rd gen). I tried the time zone thing, restarted, updated... Nothing. I live in a building with free wifi, so there are multiple routers to connect to. I switched routers and everything was gold.
Having said that, it could be your connection and not the unit itself.

Dec 13, 2013 5:04 AM in response to BrendanfromQLDby aspiring apple expert,Hi - I tried unplugging router and unplugging apple tv box as well as restarting. None of these things worked. I was scared to do the reset thinking that I may have to reload all my podcasts but actually it was really easy. Just go to general and then at the bottom of that menu reset. It will ask you for your apple ID and your password. Once you enter that all your apps should appear back on your screen! Good Luck with this.

May 12, 2014 4:20 PM in response to BrendanfromQLDby Jodyfromhi,After trying all the solutions in this thread, including reset and restart, I finally tried connecting my Apple TV to the Internet using an ethernet cable instead of via wireless. After entering my AppleID and password and switching home sharing to "off" and then "on" again, I was able to use the device and switch back to a wireless connection. It's been working normally ever since.

Oct 6, 2014 11:50 AM in response to ex razorfishby MMM Minnesota Mountain Man,This worked for me as well. Let apple TV go into screen saver mode, then wake it up by pressing the center button on the remote.
Thank You ex razorfish.

**********
Just wanted to say that this is the comment that helped me to resolve my issue. Both apple tv's, when turned on today only showed the computer and settings icons. I tried all other suggestions listed (reset, unplug, change location - although one apple tv would not even show the country list for locations - ) and after reset, the apple tv couldn't find my network. Somehow my network got wiped out (perhaps from resetting the router???) and luckily one of my computers found the unprotected basic network (default settings, no WEP, no name, no nothing). I had to reset up my network, and viola!!! the issue was resolved and I could find it and carry on happily... Thanks!!

Jun 28, 2015 3:00 PM in response to BrendanfromQLDby Simulator,I've tried everything mentioned in this thread and I cannot get the Apple TV past the Home Sharing and Settings icons.
I know the network is working because I can successfully sign in to iCloud on the Apple TV, but using the same credentials I cannot login to iTunes Store on the Apple TV. I can login to iTunes Store from the native iTunes Mac app. Also, the Location setting is empty and pretty much useless.
Do you think if I bring it to an Apple store can one of those geniuses figure it out?

Jul 3, 2015 11:41 AM in response to BrendanfromQLDby esbelme,★HelpfulJust want to help future cases with this problem with the ATV.
I tried everything mentioned above from first reply and down and nothing worked. So I called apple support (or I asked them to call me) and within 5 mins on the phone the problem was solved.
It IS a network problem - but other devices might work fine on the same network. Somehow the ATV sometimes think that it has been reset and want to try and find the location again. But it seems that quite a few internet-suppliers have closed the port, with which the ATV seach for the right location ...
Best solution - make a network from any mobile phone on a mobile network and connect your ATV to this. Then go to location and chose the right one manually before you set the location to auto. Then go all the way to the main menu and the icons should have returned.
After this you can set the ATV back to your normal network and things should be back to normal.
Hope this will help a few - otherwise - call apple
