Q: FCP 6 and Mavericks

I want to upgrade my OS to Mavericks so I can buy/install Logic which is awesome and has vastly outpaced my current DAW, Digital Performer over the years. I'm still using FCP 6.  I can't upgrade to FCP 7 of course (would if I could) and FCP X won't work for me: I have years of work for real, paying clients that isn't backward compatible with FCP X.  (not to mention the investment in 3rd party filters that haven't been re-written for X)

Bottom line: I want to buy more Apple software (Logic), but if FCP 6 won't work at the end of this odyssey, I will be really and truly scr***d.  Apple, you're not making it easy on a fellow.

Anyway, does anyone have experience running FCP 6.0.6 under Mavericks? My son has Mavericks on his iMac and FCP 6 opens and seems to run fine on it.  But that doesn't mean there aren't hidden problems.

Thx

I have now successfully done this on four computers, brand new iMacs running 10.9.4.  And I've discovered an even easier way to do this!  You don't need to edit the plist file, just move it into the Trash.  Install proceeds normally.  You can return it after you're done if you like, I don't know what (if any) possible repercussions might come from leaving it deleted.

The file, as indicated on Jeremy Johnstone's blog, is

    /System/Library/CoreServices/Installer.app/Contents/Resources/PPCRequirements.pl ist

(Note that when you get to Installer.app, you will have to Control+click and select "Show Package Contents")

This is GREAT news and needs to be disseminated far and wide the Final Cut Pro discussion boards and communities!

I was finally loaned a copy of FCS2 in an attempt to repeat Jeremy's methods, but so far without success.  I will now try your modification, which NEVER even occurred to me: hahahahahah!  Great out of the box thinking!

Hawaiian Hippy I have been trying to update my FCP 6.03 to 6.06. (on both my mac book pro) I downloaded  the same thing you did for the mac book pro and it uploaded, but doesn't say 6.05 or 6.06. It says 6.0.  Not sure if it updated or what. I found a message board link from some "expert" who said the 6.0.6 was only for mac book pro not Imacs. Is this true?

Right now I am cloning my Imac 7 right now in an attempt to update to 6.0 5 or 6.06 (After I update from 10.4.11 to OSX 10.5 or higher) "Update Software" does not offer any options for updating.

Glad I stumbled onto this thread. This is exactly what I have been researching. Not sure why my Update Software never prompted me for an update even though I have it set for auto notice. If I could update full scale without losing the fcp apps I would. I have upgraded the hardware as far as it can go. BTW if anyone has a  solution for getting rid of that stupid file vault I would appreciate. It is devouring my memory.

This thread is focused on the problem of installing FCP 6 in Lion, Mt. Lion, Mavericks and now Yosemite.

If you are only upgrading to Leopard, OS X 10.5 as you note, you should have no problem installing and updating FCP 6.

FCP works on ALL macs, not just specific models. And if you install it, it will say 6.0. You need to run a system update to get to 6.0.6.  BUT, if you have FCX installed on the same computer, the updater won't see FCP 6...it'll only see FCX and say that no update is required.

    Rob,

I know this is late, B u t, the answer to this is that the installer is Power PC / IBM code, whereas the code for  FCP 6 itself is Intel which any Mac OSX can run.

    The solution is the following:

    1. Grab your Snow Leopard install disk and install ONLY the ROSETTA function that is available in the Extras install folder.

    2. Install FCP 6

The Rosetta is the interpreter that allows OSX to run the Power PC code installer. Once this is done, you will see a dialog that says "This program" (FCP 6) was designed to run under Power PC and Intel processors.

I currently have FCP 6 installed under Lion and maverics.

    Hope this helps

There are many fallacies in your post that may result in a dangerous situation for anyone following your advice.  These risk must be pointed out:

Jeremy Johnstone's research has debunked the myth that the installer of FCP 6 is PowerPC.   Apple installed a routine into OS X Lion and thereafter that made it look like the installer was PowerPC and hence triggered the PPC Dialog box.

If you know anything about how Rosetta works, it is clear that it cannot work in Lion and thereafter.  Furthermore, if it worked for a "PPC program" such as the installer of FCP 6, why does it not work for any other PowerPC app since the release of Lion in 2011?

The fact that it worked for you only supports the theory that the installation of Rosetta sidetracks the Apple installed "routine" that stops FCP 6 from installing, but with great danger:

    1) There have been reports that the installation of Rosetta into early versions of Lion caused a corruption in Lion that laid dormant until later versions of Lion were released.  Once this corruption became active these reports indicated unexplained hard drive crashes and kernel panics rendering these Mac unusable without a complete wipe and reinstallation of software.

    2)  Has Apple fixed this Rosetta-caused corruption problem in Mavericks?  Why would Apple go to the bother to make the installation of FCP 6 ineffective in Lion and thereafter, only to later fix the Rosetta corruption problem in Mavericks?  Why not just allow FCP 6 installer to just work again?

    3)  It is virtually impossible to uninstall Rosetta once it has been installed into OS X Lion and thereafter. Have you uninstalled it?

So, you are advising people to install a Trojan Horse into their Mac which could potentially result in severe problems months, even years later!

Following this course appears foolish given the 3 other installation methods, especially the one described earlier by Hawaiian Hippie, which completely disproves that the installation program for FCP 6 is PowerPC based!

One follows your advice at their own risk!

I can now confirm that HawaiianHippie's method works for Final Cut Studio 2 (Final Cut Pro 6) in Yosemite:

Two elements were excluded from the install (Compressor and Apple Qmaster - which may be due to the fact that I have not installed iLife '11 on Yosemite and hence iMovie was not available):

I ran into a glitch when attempting to install FCS2 in El Capitan.  I will continue my work there soon...

OMG I love you HawaiianHippie! Thanks to people for keeping this thread up-to-date. I wanted to install FCP6 on my laptop that's running mavericks (it's a 2005 laptop) and I knew there must be a work around to getting FCP to work. I have Final Cut Studio 2 on my imac that's running yosemite and it works fine. But I've never really had to reinstall it, because I've just upgraded OS' through the years and it's been fine.

I found the original post by Jeremy Johnstone with Terminal and hoped it would just work in 10.9, but it doesn't. Just says "command not found." Then I found another blog post from him about editing that document, and I really don't feel comfortable editing stuff like that.. then I magically found this thread and HawaiianHippie's post about just moving it to the trash. HUZZAH it worked! So now I'm installing Final Cut Studio 2 in 10.9. When that's finished, I'll take it back out of the trash.

*does a giant hug to all*

and it works in El Capitan, too!

Thanks to EcoGreg, the solution in El Capitan is to turn off Gatekeeper and SIP in El Capitan and then turn these security features back on after full installation and update.  I have not yet tried to see if only turning off one or the other of these security features will allow for the installation of FCS2 in El Capitan.
