Q: Pismo: USB 2.0 thumb drive - will it work at all?

Greetings all

I need to archive <= 30GB of Quicktime MOVs - cheaply. There some in the batch that I can live without archiving, but I would rather just drop 'em all on a thumb drive and not do Spring Cleaning first.

I know Pismo has USB 1.1 hardware. It seems that all the thumb drives online state USB 2.0. are USB 2.0 and/or 3.0 backward compatible to USB 1.x like the Philips standard = CD < CDROM < CDROM-RW < DVD < etcetera?

If not, any reliable source for vintage USB 1.1 thumb drives? All my in-site searches for USB " 1.1 " yield USB 2.0 & 3.0 results (?)

Thanx in advance

    It will work without issue.

You may have heard that USB 2.0 is backward-compatible with USB 1.0/1.1 (Full-Speed USB). While that’s true, USB 1.1 is also forward-compatible with USB 2.0.

USB 1.1 allowed a maximum transfer rate of 12Mbits/second. It is now obsolete, but both of its speeds (1.5Mbps & 12Mbps) were adopted into USB 2.0. I recommend buying a 2.0 device so as to save a little money. It looks like you won't even take advantage of 2.0. 1.0 and 1.1 are obsolete, that's why you won't find one for sale in retail. it's not worth buying a used device as NAND can wear out.

Purchase a 2.0 device and you will be fine.

    LA

To quote from the Host of ComedyCentral's @Midnight game show - " POINTS " - Looks like you may have had to start over with AppleID like I did.

I had continued my search for such an animal after posting and found one brand "Patriot" that actually had the foresight to include the verbiage "backwards compatible with USB 1.1" in its feature description. Should have begun search with "backwards" as a keyword

I then searched for the best price and found Patriot Axle 32GB 2.0 USB Flash Drive (PSF32GAUSBG) at Amazon for $10 + $5 shipping

I will reply here with my hopefully success story

The aforementioned Patriot Axle 32GB is happily churning away in the background accepting many GBs of much needed backup data - writing at ±1.2MB/sec according to Activity monitor

    Totally plug&play.
