Q: MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

I first noticed this after my MBP [Retina] had gone to sleep, but: when returning to the login screen (since I have it set to require a password whenever the computer is idle long enough) I noticed what appeared to a very faint ghosting primarily noticeable on darker backgrounds.

After messing around with it a bit, there seems to be a fairly consistent in-display ghosting that occurs without much time at all; I was able to leave my screen on (a little above half-brightness) for about 10-15 minutes and the ghosted "burn" would be of the screen I left it on (which I deliberately reconfigured so that everything would be a new position).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a normal thing that I just have to get used to? It's not really noticeable at all in standard use.

To the fourth repair! This is just hilarious.
I had a Samsung screen (my third display) for over a year and everything was smooth sailing until a row of dead pixels again. I get it back with this awful green tint on it.

Both screens are on full brightness. Mine is left. Their in-store display is right.

They also wiped my computer this time for no apparent reason. Probably to discourage me from seeking more repairs. You can't just Time Machine restore a Windows partition.

All Apple can "offer" me is more empty promises and a complete deflection of these issues onto me as my fault or something. I've had it. You can treat me like the problem all you want. Whatever. Keep rolling around in your billions. Throw the ball over the electric fence again and tell me things will be different. Sell a repair to me like I'm being done a favor. Oh I'd love to hear another lecture about how high brightness damages displays or variations in tint. Wipe it again. Do it. Take it for another week. I've gotten so cozy using public computers at the library, so go ahead and give me another week without a computer. It's no inconvenience to me, so don't even apologize and carry on as you flippantly have. Have one of your Geniuses roll their eyes at me again. Have one of your senior advisors tell me this will be the last time for sure. I'm ready to drink this urine again. You can't break my spirit anymore than you already have. Repair away with your supply of second-rate displays. We're going to play your repair game even when my AppleCare runs up. $600 a time if it takes. Let's keep it going. Because I'm knee deep in this crap and the AppleCare masters tell me my only option is to stick it through. And when the new model comes, you bet I'm going to plunk down $2400 to be treated like a subordinate again. Heck, I might even line up for it or something. Thanks. Thanks a ton. I will have a wonderful evening. Thank you. Thank you for the best display ever.

"You're more powerful than you think" Ha. Ha. Hahaha. Heh.

I hope something happens that sends your stock price back to 1996 where you belong.

Thanks, but I doubt they read those. Maybe at best I'll get some passive-agressive response.

Hi folks, I've had the pleasure of running into the IR issue as well lately; the thumbnails from youtube videos have decided to stay on my screen and I'm not even sure what I want to do anymore. I have a late 2013 13 inch rMBP which I purchased in October. Initially I was thought I should just take it in for repairs but I really don't want to do this shaky and seemingly never-ending dance with Apple's customer service.

Do you guys think there is even the slightest chance that I might be able to get a refund and take my money elsewhere? This computer has been nothing but trouble since I got it; first was the screen freeze issue, then I realized that the lid and screen have a rather noticeable leftward skew, then the fans seemed to stop working and the laptop started to overheat regularly and most recently this IR nonsense. Up until now I'd held my tongue regarding these shortcomings because I'd found simple workarounds, but this is the final straw. I'm honestly fed up with the constant and infuriating (seriously! I lost a 15 page paper worth ~30% of my grade thanks to this infernal machine) problems that have come with this computer and now I just want to be rid of it.

I'm a student; I don't have all that much money. I decided to make an investment in a piece of hardware that I thought was going to serve me well through at least the rest of college, this unfortunately seems less and less likely with each passing day. If this is how the computer is going to behave, then I struggle to see exactly what it is that I paid a premium for.

Good god I'm mad right now.

Have a MBPr 13" (2014), and two prior (late 2013), all showing slight IR. The 2014 model seems to be less noticeable, but still there. Going to take this back.

The newly updated version (announced couple of days ago) may contain the mythical IGZO display we've been craving, either that or it won't be there till broad well update 2015

So picked up my Mid-2014 15" rMBP yesterday from Apple Store Regent's Street (London). I got the base 15" (2.2Ghz Quad Core i7, 16GB RAM & 256GB SSD).

The good news is there is no colour cast on the screen that I can detect and no IR so far.

The only screen abnormality I've found is possible uniformity issues - but I'm not sure. When I look at the centre of the screen head on, its nice and bright with good colour and contrast. Whilst looking at it head on, the right hand side appears slightly darker with a little less contrast. The left side does this also but you'd barely notice it. If I tilt the screen or move my head so the right hand side of the screen is head on, the brightness is almost as good as the centre.....but not perfect.

How this translates to day to day use is that whilst reading a sentence of text on a white background (like webpages) your eyes see a gradual darkening of the background when your eyes hit the last 25% of the screen on the right.

I've played the panel lottery with my Samsung LED TV as that had banding problems and I'll be damned if I have to go through that again with Apple.

What do people think? Within tolerance or fault?

I have played the display lottery for likely as long as anyone here. I went through three screen replacements and recently had my entire machine replaced.

My current screen (the original in my late 15" 2013 replacement model) exhibits the similar symptoms as yours. Head on, it looks pretty good. There is no yellow tint or IR as far as I can tell (and believe me I would notice).

That being said, there is a slight reddish tint to the display at any angle that isn't orthogonal. This results in the sides of the display looking reddish when a white or gray background covers the entire display. That being said, it is hardly noticeable in normal use. In addition, I actually found a picture the other day with my original 2012 rMBP display (which was -- by memory -- "perfect") in the background, and it exhibits this same red "sheen."

Are the colors perfectly uniform? No. The back light color/brightness is **** poor for an ultra-premium laptop, and the whites are still not completely uniform (this is distinct from the red sheen). In addition, when looking at the screen from wide horizontal angles there are very obvious dark splotches (interestingly, different splotches appear when looking on from the left and right).

At this point,  I have concluded that apple just isn't capable of manufacturing the displays that they market. Those who purport to have "perfect" displays are probably not as observant / bothered by small inconsistencies.  While the psychological stress of knowing your screen isn't perfect *****, I have finally scored a display that is good enough to forget about while working.

My advice? If you are within the 14 day return period exchange it for another one. If not, don't waste your time going through the display replacement process. It is a hassle and all three replacements I received were absolutely horrible.

    Best of luck!

Does your red tint depend on the ambient lighting conditions and whether it's sunlight or artificial light?

I received my refresh model today. It still has yellow tinting on the bottom portion of the screen. I went through 4 of the previous model so I am giving up and just going to keep this one.

Apple just released an update to the rMBP on the 29th of July, 2014.

If anyone plans on purchasing one, please post your screen experience.

I'm really interested in picking one up but i fear the issue may still persist.

My 2012 rMBP had IR, luckily i was able to sell it.

It's to hard to decide if i still want to stick with apple after this huge screen issue. But they are the best laptops aside from the IR problem...
