Q: Using the new-look forums, asking for positive comments

Dear Fellow Users,

I am starting a discussion on how to make the most of this revised website for Apple Support Communities. Please keep this discussion positive. Please confine complaints to one of the many negative threads.

Remember that many of these changes are the result of feedback to Apple. We may have got what we wished for.

Gains:

- Spell checker in the Reply box;

-

New ways of working:

- The blue dot has gone. I can't tell which discussions I have or haven't read.

Tip by deggie. In the home page of a forum, click to the right of the address bar of your browser, add /content at the end of the URL. Press enter. You will see three options across the page just above the threads: All Content, User Tips and Discussions. Click on Discussions. Threads with new content will have titles that are in bold. Now save that page in your browser bookmarks. For example, my bookmark for the 'Using Apple Support Communities' forum, shows this URL:

https://discussions.apple.com/community/using_apple_support_communities/content? filterID=contentstatus%5Bpublished%5D~objecttype~objecttype%5Bthread%5D

And the view is Bold for unread

Screen Shot 2014-06-22 at 12.20.17 am.png

- The forums keep logging me off after a period of inactivity.

Good. That may stop the spammers posting multiple messages that have nothing to do with the purpose of a forum.

More gains or workarounds, anyone?

Regards,

Ian.

In reply to ronenhaim's  post about automatically putting ones product info into a post, I break it down.

    User product version in https://discussions.apple.com/

Sorry, Copy/Paste didn't bring in the links and image.

Nope. No products automatically listed. I must be missing something.

    Another oddity...

At your OP for this thread (granted there is the fact that it has been marked answered) it looks like this [2 parts]

    2014-07-19+11-08_IansEndOfOP01.jpg

    2014-07-19+11-08_IansEndOfOP02.jpg

If you recall, was your "My Products" listed when you started this thread? If so, all of 'em, or just the first line?

Sounds like this will require a TEST CASE

How did you get the FIRST (default) "Product" to list all that stuff? Choose [Other] from the pull-down and key in the rest in the text field?

The 'my products' feature was just in the last couple of days added back into ASC, & so far is only available to the person starting a topic in their first post (not in replies). You can access & edit your list from the 'Post' page when starting a discussion or at https://discussions.apple.com/model-info.jspa.

If you have not started a product list, you can do so through the 'Add a product' link at the bottom of the model info page.

    Ian, et al

as I am on Walkabout thru this Bush, I have many teeenie questions accruing in my head. I can narrow down several into what I think could be its own topic for an OP, but I come here today for ya'lls sage advice about that.

Let me preface that I have used Advanced search for this info - to no avail. Dunno if my search terms were insufficient or what, but I really can't find a User Tip, KB doc, or thread that deals with this stuff.

Of course you will wanna know what these things are - let me just say that they are pretty much definitions of what some icons mean and what some terms mean and some choices in obscure places like pull down menus and such. I think to adequately explain some of these obscure ones they might need to get kinda separated out from the icons & terms. maybe all of 'em separate so they could be expanded as others add to 'em over time.

I guess my question is - Does each teenie subject rate a question?

    OR

would a thread with me replying to myself with more questions as subheadings be better

    OR

Should I do these things here? Which way, all at once or one at a time?

Users that ask multiple questions in one post results in confusion IMHO. Different users will reply to one or more of your questions and as a result it's hard to follow the conversation. If you have to scroll back to view what has been suggested and tried, you waste a lot of time.

Asking in the appropriate forum would be next. Users that are running Mavericks for example ask on Snow Leopard forum. Reply is given for Snow Leopard not Mavericks.

If you aren't sure how to describe your problem, a screen shot showing the problem is the next best option.

If they are questions relating to your OS, post in the Tiger forum. If they relate to your hardware, post in that forum. Keep it simple and don't mix issues. As well, we have been encouraged to start our own thread rather than tacking on to someone else's - some seasoned contributors may not bother with a thread that is more than 2 or 3 pages long and simply has irrelevant discussions added in and, it would be called threadjacking.

You are helping me with answer to the Qs you cite.

I know this is a VERY long thread, but I have been in on it from the get-go. The latter part of your post implies novice-ity - far from it. half of Ian's User Tip are mine

My Qs will have nothing to do with anything but Using ASC. These Qs are really likely to be answered by the participants in this thread.

This really belongs here in this thread, KINDA...

Speaking of screenshots, why do different Apple methods of getting 'em yield different file types - TIFF for Grab, PNG for CMD+SHIFT+3 (+4) - TIFF doesn't display natively in this forum like JPG, PNG, GIF, etc. - I like Grab because you can pick a cursor for the Grab and can pull a menu, but alas, you have to then take it to Preview to merely convert it to a displayable format.

I'll wait a little for more feedback.

    Howdy Ian,

I thought your User Tip could use a bump in Using ASC. Remember the " ⌘ Command + s " I discovered by accident??

Turns out it is a documented feature -- at JiveSoftware anyhow...

    From the Jive Area

    http://docs.jivesoftware.com/cloud_int/end_user/jive.help.core/#user/UsingaJiveC ommunity.html

    AND specifically this page

    http://docs.jivesoftware.com/cloud_int/end_user/jive.help.core/#user/HowcanIuset hekeyboardtocontrolmenus.html

AND EDITed for Mac Keyboard by yours truly

    Keyboard Shortcuts

You can use the following keyboard shortcuts when using

    the content editor in Jive.

Note: Formatting characteristics are not retained when you

copy and paste content from Microsoft Office applications into Jive.

This is also apparently true for TextEdit " .rtfd "

             - "Rich Text with Pictures" format.

                          || Content Editing Shortcuts ||

    Key ComboAction
    ⌘ Command + cCopy
    ⌘ Command + xCut
    ⌘ Command + vPaste
    ⌘ Command + zUndo
    ⌘ Command + y or ⌘ Command + Shift-zRedo
    ⌘ Command + bBold
    ⌘ Command + iItalic
    ⌘ Command + uUnderline
    ⌘ Command + 1, -2, -3, -4, -5, or -6Heading levels 1-6
    ⌘ Command + 7Format as paragraph
TabIndent 5 spaces or indent a list item 1 level
Shift + TabOutdent 5 spaces or outdent a list item 1 level
EscMove the focus to the first visible submit button
    ⌘ Command + s

    Publishes your content.

    CAUTION:

In previous versions, this key combination saved a draft, rather than publishing, for blog posts only. This is no longer the case.

BTW, the "TABLE TOOL" is a PAIN!!!

hope this finds you and yours well DownUnder

    Hi CCC,

Thanks for that. I'm not sure if our User Tip is still relevant. I am using an extension by Etresoft et al, and I have followed the advice to edit the forum URLs and save as bookmarks. Appearance of ASC is now to my liking, and I think it "hides" any updates to the software (at least it makes it hard to know when the native look changes).

I think that User Tip is still useful for new members, but it's time for me to leave tweaking the look to those who know more than I. This is not a brush off and thank you for your contributions. I just feel out of my depth.

New discussion by you? I will follow it with interest.

    Kind regards,

    Ian.

RE: Relevant... You said it " ... new members "

I have come to terms as well. I use one thing in TenFourFox (10.4foxv31.1.0) = " Stylish " which allows me to do tt2's trick of making unVisited  links of followed threads magenta!. The rest is browser zoom favorite setting (NOT default) and (as you said) browser bookmarks in the sidebar - foldering is very much  required.

RE: New Discussion... EEeeekk!! I just got back from banishment and barely have 200 points! My credibility is not YOUR cred! I will try it, but only if you insist. I am content to help piecemeal.

    kind regards back at ya!

    EDIT (too late)

Another option... is you start it and I take over -- someone here would try to make it a POLL  or some other violation of the ToU if I did it.
