Jul 19, 2014 12:44 PM in response to dgoldhamerby Eric Root,Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
You might need to redo the View settings after an update.

Jul 19, 2014 6:53 PM in response to Eric Rootby dgoldhamer,Thank you Eric.
I removed the .plist and restarted, but the problem (of the contacts application going into an infinite loop) remained. So I replaced the .plist with the original one and am now back where I started.
Do you have any other suggestions?
Thanks

Jul 20, 2014 9:26 AM in response to dgoldhamerby Barney-15E,Does it happen with only that contact, or all (many) contacts?
By "my contact" do you mean your personal contact card?

Jul 20, 2014 5:10 PM in response to Barney-15Eby dgoldhamer,Unfortunately it happens on any contact I try to add or edit field content, as soon as I enter a keystroke to change a selected field.
I'm particularly wanting to add to my own contact info so that Safari's and Thunderbird's auto-fill function is more useful.

Jul 20, 2014 6:33 PM in response to dgoldhamerby Barney-15E,Back up your contacts by using the Export>Contacts Archive command in the File menu.
Quit Contacts.
Go into your user/Library/Application Support/AddressBook folder.
You can copy and paste this into the "Go To Folder…" command from the Go menu in Finder:
~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
You'll see several files that start with AddressBook-v22.abcddb (the other two have -shm and -wal suffixes).
You will also find some in the subfolders of Sources.
Delete all of them.
Start Contacts and see if you can add and edit contacts.

Jul 20, 2014 11:31 PM in response to Barney-15Eby dgoldhamer,Thanks for the suggestion, but...
I tried deleting those files and restarting contacts but the problem persisted for all card editing.
(Of, course new files of the same names were created.)
Fortunately this problem does not prevent other, more important, apps from executing correctly;
but it is indicative of some OSX10.9.4 (at least) problem :-(

No, just something with your Mac.
What kind of Contacts accounts do you have?
Again, make sure you have a backup.
I would sign out of all online accounts like iCloud or Google, then move the images and metadata folders to the desktop.
Delete everything in the AddressBook folder.
Start Contacts and see if you can add or edit.
Either way, you can restore from your backup and sign back into your online accounts.
If it still doesn't work, I would then delete the com.apple.ical folder from you user/Library/Containers folder.

Jul 22, 2014 12:08 AM in response to Barney-15Eby dgoldhamer,I have no contacts accounts (to my knowledge). My personal card was created when I first installed OSX10.9 and/or the Mavericks upgrade.
I tried deleting all of the cards in the contacts app, but when I attempted to re-create my personal card the app still went into an infinite loop.
Just an attempt to see if the contents of other cards was affecting the app. I also checked to see that I had write privileges for all related files.

Jan 5, 2016 10:10 AM in response to dgoldhamerby rawsaxy,Did you ever resolve this issue? I've been having the same problem since upgrading to El Capitan. The moment I click "Edit" I get the spinning beach ball for 5-7 seconds, and then any change made will cause another delay (spinning beach ball) when going to another field or clicking "Done".
I already reported it via Feedback, as well as speaking to one of the technicians since I participate in beta testing various apple software. None of the suggestions posted have resolved the issue.

Jan 22, 2016 7:28 AM in response to rawsaxyby Mac-Hero,RAW,
Let me ask you this (because I am experiencing the same thing). My contacts are not 'ON MY MAC' or part of 'ICLOUD'. Mine are only located in my GOOGLE account - where are your contacts located that you are editing - different locations, or some provider outside your local system?

Jan 22, 2016 11:46 AM in response to Mac-Heroby rawsaxy,Mac-Hero,
I resolved the issue following the advice I found on macrumors by BrianBaughn in December. I can copy here what worked for me, but he deserves the credit. Not sure where he found the steps, though.
To answer your question, my contacts are also only from my Google account. When setting up the account in "Contacts" I did what most do and selected "Google" from among the options. It worked until the El Capitan update. So, here are the steps I followed according to the post I mentioned that solved the issue for me.
"Last night I found discovered a fix. In a nutshell it's turning off contact syncing for the Google account and adding your Google contacts sync back via CardDAV":
- Go to System Preferences>Internet Accounts
- Uncheck "Contacts" for the Google account
- Click the "+" to add a new account
- Select "CardDAV"
- Set Account Type to "Manual"
- User Name is Gmail address
- Password is password, or a new app-specific password if 2-factor authorization is "ON" for Google
- Server Address is "google.com"
Here is the link: http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/el-capitan-contacts-app-freezes-when-editing -google-contacts.1945254/
Hope this helps others as it fixed it for me.

Jun 8, 2016 2:23 AM in response to rawsaxyby orbitus.cz,It is working but you need to adjust settings on your googler account.
You need to allow loging in by less secure applications. Settings can be found here: https://myaccount.google.com/security at the bottom.
Hope it will help you.

Jun 8, 2016 11:29 AM in response to orbitus.czby rawsaxy,orbits.cz,
Thanks for your input. As I mentioned before your post, though, I thankfully was able to resolve the issue with the steps I listed. At least for me, the problem was not with Google account settings, nor was it fixed by allowing logging in by less secure applications since that setting was already set to "On" before.
What fixed it for me was setting the Google account in Apple Mail to use "CardDAV", and account to "Manual". I truly believe that if the 8 steps listed in my post are followed, it should resolve this issue.
