Q: Mac Mini loses network connectivity

II've got the original MM running Snow Leopard.  The problem is that after 3-4 days I have to reboot the MM to restore network connectivity.  I can't connect to it either on my home network, or offsite over the internet.  After I reboot it works fine for 3-4 days and I have to do it again.  It's set not to sleep.  Didn't use to have the problem.  any ideas?  Thanks

What Mini to you have? The original Mini has a G4 processor and those can only go to Leopard.

Are you connected via wifi or ethernet? Try the other method.

Do other device have this problem?

What is symptom of not connection?

What happens when you run Network Diagnostics?

I upgraded the processor to a dual core, etc.  I'm connected via ethernet.  I don't run any other device all the time.  If I'm at home on the home network, and I try to connect to the Mini which has a fixed IP address using VNC, it won't connect.  It says the Mini is disconnected or turned off.  If I'm at my office or elsewhere let's say, and try to logon via my dyn account with dynu.com it can't connect.  If I'm at the office and try to connect to the Mini on its VPN connection, it won't connect.  How do I run Network Diagnostics?  Thanks.

You can't upgrade from a G4 to an Intel Processor.

Did you upgrade the processor in an 2006 (Core Solo or Core Duo) to the Core 2 Duo processor?

    Hi,

    Try

Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

and : About NVRAM and PRAM

to ensure a refresh of the SMC

and if still the issue persists,  try: OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?

to refresh the loading of OS X

    Cheers

OK, so I rebooted the Mini and after 4 days it happened again.  The symptom was as usual, I couldn't connect to it either thru the ethernet at home or over the internet.  I even tried my AppleTv and it said I needed to turn on Home Sharing.  Well that is on, but obviously the AppleTv couldn't connect to the Mini.  I use a wireless keyboard and mouse and turn them off when I'm not using them.  So I turned on the monitor, and there was no image of the Mini's desktop screen, just black.  The white light on the Mini was solid white.  I turned on my keyboard and mouse to connect, and it couldn't connect.  Its like the Mini is asleep or something.  So I couldn't get a response and decided to see if I could wake it if in fact it was asleep.  I held in the power button for about 4 seconds, but nothing happened, still a black screen.  So I decided to turn it off and restart it.  I held in the power button for 10 seconds and it shut off.  I then unplugged it for 15 seconds and plugged it back in.  Then I held in the power button and it restarted as normal.  It showed an error message, and I've copied the first part of the message below.  It talks about 2 panic attacks, whatever they are.  Hope this is helpful, and thanks for your time.  Here's the error message:

    Try running Apple Hardware Test

    Using Apple Hardware Test

Are you using the original memory?

Googling shows that zalloc is memory management

I upgraded the memory at the same time I upgraded the processor and that's been over 2 years ago with no issues.

    Hi, some checks:

    Check these Energy Saver settings:

    - Put the hard disks(s) to sleep when possible -> disabled

    - Allow power button to put the computer to sleep -> disabled

    - Restart automatically if the computer "freezes" -> enabled

    - Wake for Ethernet network access -> enabled

If you  can, post the last two complete Panic reports:   use /Applications/Utilities/Console -> System Diagnostic Reports  - select - copy - paste

    - Ensure no private info. is posted.

    - With the upgrade to the Processor, did you change the RAM?

    Cheers

I also ran pmset -g in Terminal and here is what it had:

    Active Profiles:

    AC Power -1*

    Currently in use:

    hibernatemode 0

    womp 1

    sleep 0 (imposed by 281)

    powerbutton 0

    disksleep 0

    hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage

    autorestart 1

    ttyskeepawake 1

    displaysleep 0

I deleted the plist file and setup Energy Options again, and turned off the stuff that was on, but no difference.

I notice that when it appears to go to "sleep", the light on the front of the Mini is a "solid white", not "slowly flashing white" like it does when you put it to sleep from the Main Menu.  This seems to be the indicator of the problem.  The Mini is on, but its not responding.  Its not sleeping, but something else is going on.  It doesn't respond to my bluetooth keyboard or mouse when I turn them on.  They try to connect because their lights flash, but they can't connect until I push the power button in for 6 seconds or so and the Mini then reboots.

I have just now reset the SMC.

I don't know what else to do, but appreciate your time and help.

    Hi, thanks for the info.

    - the RAM spec should be correct.

    - Energy Saver options are spot on.

    - Looking at the panics:  Perform these checks one step at a time and check whether resolved.

    - Iantivirus is loading.   Remove the App as per standard Mac App Store removal : http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-for-Mac/How-do-I-remove-iAntivirus/m-p/724 756#M5763

    - Check within System Profiler that Bluetooth and USB devices are detected correctly.  ( speeds and Current usage )

    - Remove unused devices from Bluetooth.

    - Use a wired keyboard and mouse

    - System Preferences -> Security -> General -> Use secure virtual memory:   try enabled   and disabled.

    - Use a wired keyboard and mouse

    - Reboot machine without these devices disconnected

    USB Device: WinTV HVR-980, 0x2040  (Hauppauge Computer Works, Inc.), 0x6513, 0xfd600000 / 3

When you say "- Reboot machine without these devices disconnected" did you mean to say "... with these devices disconnected" ?  Thanks.
