Q: HP Printer not working after 10.9.4

I have 2 Macbooks here.  One is an 2012 15 inch Retina and the other is a 2014 Macbook Air 13 inch.  I never had any problems printing previous to the 10.9.4 upgrade.  I had been sending print jobs to my HP Photosmart 7510 and scanning from the 7510 over wifi as well.

Now after the recent upgrade to 10.9.4 I cannot print.  I have tried resetting the print service and removed the printer multiple times and re-added.  Nothing.

Curiously, if I hit the + and the 7510 shows up as a Nearby printer (which is hit or miss) it will install correctly at least for a little bit before it stops working.  Otherwise  when I hit + it goes straight to the add printer box and then the 7510 is listed as bonjour.  It will not auto-select the driver.  I have to do it manual.  It then appears to add it but fails every time.

As a side note I am able to print to this printer via wifi from my iPad, iPhone, and Windows Laptop.  A direct connect from the Macbook to the printer via USB will print as well.  Printing via wifi from the Air and Pro will not work.

Any help at all is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

If you have installed the HP printing software, you should remove it. It's not needed with that printer.

It could be a network problem, such as the printer is not on the same network as the MacBooks.

    Hope this helps.

They are on the same network.  First thing I checked.  Very strange.  It started happening right after 10.9.4 on 2 Macbooks.  Very strange.  I will continue to hunt for a solution!  Thanks.

Have you tried creating a new network and see if you can print through that?

I got excited cause I thought it was fixed!  But nope.  I used Clean My Mac to remove all the HP software.  Then I reset the print service and restarted the mac (did this for both).

On the macbook pro the 7510 showed up as a nearby printer.  So I installed it, everything went automatic, and it worked.  a few hours later it stopped working!

On the macbook air, it did not show up as a nearby printer but rather as a bonjour printer on the add printer dialoge box.  I went ahead and clicked add and interestingly it added the printer using the AirPrint driver.  On my Pro in installed using the HP Driver.

Can confirm the printer is connected to same network.  Can print to it via USB from both macs, via wifi from iOS devices, and wifi from a windows laptop.

    Maddening!  Any help is appreciated.

    TIA

"CleanMyMac" is a scam. It may have wrecked your whole installation.

The developer's instructions don't completely remove it. Follow those instructions, then do as below.

    Back up all data.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2.Agent.plist

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

Services Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Repeat with this line:

    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2.Agent

Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Never again install "CleanMyMac" or anything like it.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select

              Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Reinstall the OS.* Your data should be unaffected unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.

If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.

*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

OK I don't want to jinx anything but a simple restart of my Airport may have fixed the problem!  I was running down the list of solutions in my head and I realized I had pretty much restarted every device except the Airport.  Restarted the Airport and now the printer has worked since.  Odd thing is that I have the FiOS router handing out DHCP and the Airport is in bridge mode.  So far so good.  I will keep you posted.  TIA for all the tips.

Glad to hear you got it going.

However, you should follow Linc's advice on removing CleanMyMac because you may have serious problems down the road outside of printing if you leave it there.

    Hi Steve,

Im running OS El Capitan. Was having the same problem.

I took your advice and restarted my Apple AirPort Extreme router.

My HP Printer is now working like a charm!

    Thanks!
