Q: How can I transfer a large pdf from iBooks on my ipad to my MacBook desktop?

How can I transfer a large pdf from iBooks on my ipad to my MacBook desktop? I can't email it to myself because the file is too large. The only option it gives me is to print.

I believe my iPad is 4th generation.

MacBook, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

    Hi.

I looked at the link you sent me but the pdfs that I have are not purchased from the store so I cannot sync them. Any other suggestions?

    - Pdfs can be added to iBooks on the Mac and then should sync to the iPad.

    - It doesn't appear that pdf sync from iPad to the Mac works.  I don't have a current iPad so I have limitations

    To overcome these limitations:

    - I use Adobe Reader on the iPad and Mac and sync the pdfs via iTunes.

    - Adobe Reader for the iPad has an option to " Open in iBooks "

    - As well, On the Mac I use an App called handyPrint.  This app enables iPads to print to normal printers connected to Macs.

    - handyPrint also can configure a "Save as PDF in folder" which then is available via Print on the iPad to a folder on the Mac.

    Hope this helps

On your Mac, open iBooks, and in Preferences > General Preferences > select Sync: Sync bookmarks, highlights, and collections across devices. Close the Preferences panel. Quit iBooks.

WIth your iPad connected to your Mac, and showing under Devices in the left panel of iTunes, click once on your iPad’s name. This will reveal a toolbar, that among its items, is Books, which you should click.

You should choose Sync Books, and then,  Selected books. Choose the category Books and PDF files. If the PDF on you iPad does not appear in the listed books, you may have to Sync once to update this view, and then check the PDF you want synced with iBooks on your Mac. Sync again.

Once your PDF is synchronized and appears in OS X iBooks, you can select it, and drag/drop to your Desktop.

    Hi Joceyj.

There are many different methods to do this.

    1. iTunes Sync, iBooks in iTunes can sync back to your iOS device or if it isn't in iTunes you can copy it to the iBooks app (or any other kind of PDF reader you may have installed e.g. Adobe Reader) under the apps tab for your iOS device in iTunes.

Not everyone likes working though iTunes for this kind of task as it tends to get a bit cumbersome so here are other alternatives if you do this sort of thing often.

    2. There are a few third party apps for mac and windows that allow you to view and manage the files associated with the different apps on your iOS device, in my mind the most commonly know one is DiskAid, it allows you to easily manage files associated with an app in a similar fashion to finder meaning copy multiple files and folders, look inside subfolders of an app which iTunes can't do the last time I checked and is much more intuitive than trying to accomplish this task though iTunes, it is free to download of mac and windows, it also has a few other nifty features you might also like, after setup you can also access your device wirelessly which is handy.

There are other apps that do similar things such as iFunbox ect... other apps like cyberduck which you would need to use in conjunction with some sort of FTP browser app on the iOS side or for more advanced access there are apps on iOS that allow you to see your macs files as another mac would on the network and you can copy and move to your hearts content.

    3. For future knowledge Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite and iOS 7 and 8 will be able to AirDrop files with each other, I have the beta and it really makes it very simple and intuitive to accomplish tasks such as file transfer, I move files across my devices often so I welcome this feature with open arms and have been using it since the beta was released. This won't work for you right now as I am assuming you are still running Mavericks, but it will when you update later in the year its good to know you can do it that way.
