Great! Okay, once you're tried everything and it works, here come the next steps:

Quit any apps that are open.

Eject and disconnect your external G drive and anything else (everything but the keyboard and mouse/trackpad).

Hit Restart in the File Menu and, right at the startup sound, press down these keys: Command + R (that's two keys - the letter R and Command, ok). Hold those keys down until you see a Utilities window (that will take a while). The window will look like this:

    Screen Shot 2014-07-16 at 5.33.00 PM.png

You are now using the new recovery partition from your system.

First, highlight Disk Utility and open it.

Choose your hard drive (Macintosh HD or whatever you've named it) and then click on the 'erase' tab. When that is open, choose erase. That won't take long. When finished, make sure it still says Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format and quit Disk Utility from the File menu and you'll be back with that Utilities window.

Next, highlight 'Reinstall Mac OS X'.

That is a very big file, so it will take quite some time (it's over 5 GB).

When that is finished, you should be good to go.

There'll be one more thing and that is to get your iTunes stuff back and I'll hope turingtest will take over at that point if necessary.

Don't worry about your keyboard and trackpad - you need those anyway during the whole process. Just disconnect other stuff. (or did you mean that you have a wired and a wireless keyboard and mouse? In that case, I'd use the wired one and put the other one in a closet temporarily).

If you should have trouble with the Command + R, you can - as a different option - hold down the Option key during restart. If you do that, you should get a grey screen with two icons showing: your hard drive and something called recovery HD. Choose the recovery and you wind up with the same Utilities window. Sometimes it's a little bit more difficult with a wireless keyboard, but I try to hold down the keys right away after I hit the restart and that usually works.

It's getting late where you are - make sure that you don't do anything with the computer while it's downloading the OS, ok. But look at it once in a while to make sure things are moving along ok. So you may want to wait to do this until tomorrow maybe or it might get really late (it takes me 2 - 3 hours to download it, others get it faster, and some connections are even slower).

That sounds great - you did one heck of a good job!

I forgot: of course, don't unplug your internet connection because you'll need that.

And, you have an iPad and/or iPhone, right? If you run into a snag, let the computer be wherever it's at and post the problem with one of those, ok.

    Great to hear Byron!

So it's all working ok (except for getting your stuff back of course)? That is wonderful!

I've asked for some help of people who know more about iTunes than I do, so just hang in there, ok.

I'll check in again later (have to leave right now for a while).

If not in a computer file backup:

You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:

Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

    Hi Byron,

You copied over your iTunes folder into your G-Drive before you did the erase and reload of OS X.

What you need to do now is copy that iTunes folder back into your user profile's Music folder as this is the standard place for the iTunes library to live on your computer.

Is this an app?  I can't find anything legitimate with that name other than what appears to be an Apple oriented news web site.

    Safari Extensions:

      1Password: Version: 4.2.3

This one is out-of-date (latest appears to be v4.4.1).

    Time Machine:

      Time Machine not configured!

Now get Time Machine rolling and you'll be in great shape.
