Q: Profile Manager Error, Not Using Profile Manager

I am managing a Mountain Lion server running File Share and Website services.

About two days ago I began receiving the error "An error occurred on the server while reading settings. The error occurred while reading settings for the Profile Manager service." I am not running the Profile Manager service. When I click on it it says Error Reading Settings.

It has not affected performance.

Does anyone know the cause of this, and any possible solutions.

I have found instructions on how to reset Profile Manager but do not want to do this until I know it will not effect my other services.

Thank you for your help,

Tom

Can anyone tell me if clearing and restarting profile manager will interrupt and delete any settings in file share and website services?

Resetting Profile Manager won't affect File Shares and Web Services. What is not clear is why you're receiving error messages concerning it when you're not using it - as far as you know? Perhaps the problem lies with Open Directory instead? Profile Manager relies heavily on Open Directory and you can't have one without the other. Fundamental to the server as a whole regardless of what you want to use it for is a correctly configured DNS Service. Both PM and OD rely on it heavily. DNS does not have to be on the server itself just as long as there's a DNS server locally (assuming a private LAN) somewhere it can resolve it's hostname and fixed IP address to is all that counts.
