Q: MALWARE ON MY MAC

So today, I was trying to get a program for free ( how stupid of me). So I asked my friend about how he got this program and he told me he got it off of pirate bay and gave me the link and everything. So I tried to install it and nothing happened, he was attempting to walk me through it,however it still wasn't working, so eventually I just gave up. However, I started noticing I began getting random pop-ups on google chrome, so I went and searched up on " How to get pop-ups off of my mac" then I was informed that I may have malware. So I go into apple discussion and follow what is told to me in this link How to avoid or remove Mac Defender malware in Mac OS X v10.6 or earlier , however the part where it says :

  1. Under the Process Name column, look for the name of the app and click to select it; common app names include: MacDefender, MacSecurity or MacProtector.

I can't seem to find " Common app names" . So I just ended up deleting google chrome. I downloaded ClamXav from the app store and it came back that my macbook is clean, but I'm still receiving pop-ups on safari. Can someone help me please !

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)
