Q: Reinstall OS to solve problems?

I have run Disk Utility from the Snow Leopard install disk but my system keeps slowing down and then I have to do it again. Would doing a reinstall of the the OS be a good way to solve this problem? I do not have the original install DVD's that came with the computer but do have a Snow Leopard install disk. I also have two backups, Time Machine and SuperDuper. I'm running 10.6.8 so after the install I would have to get all of the updates to return to it. I do not want to upgrade the OS now as some of my apps would not be compatible with the newer version.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
