Q: Keyboard & mouse extremely slow to respond to input

Since installing Mavericks, my bluetooth Apple mouse and keyboard are slow to respond, especially the keyboard.  Typing is now a long tedious operation I call "click and wait."  I can type a few letters and then sit and wait while the busy icon swirls away for seconds, then completes the letters I entered.  This is unacceptable Apple!  A computer without a keyboard is nothing more than a pretty dust collector.

    Hi xofer,

Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.

It sounds like you're experiencing unexpected behavior after upgrading to Mavericks.

To troubleshoot this, try these steps first:

    Bluetooth Quick Assist

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1153

Recharge or replace your Bluetooth device's battery

If your Bluetooth device's battery is low, you may experience connection issues. Depending on the type of device you have, try charging your battery (if your device has a rechargeable battery) or replacing disposable batteries with fresh ones.

    Restart your computer

Sometimes a simple restart of your Mac is all it takes to get things running smoothly again. You may also want to try resetting your computer's PRAM and NVRAM.

If the behavior persists after trying these steps, try to pair your mouse and keyboard again in the Bluetooth section of System Preferences. See the "Pairing your Apple Wireless Keyboard with another Mac" section of this article for help with this:

    Regards,

I have had the same general issue although mine is with the Apple USB connceted keyboard.  The bluetooth mouse responds normally.

The issue only happens when I switch applications, for instance... I'm in Chrome and typing is normal but then switch to Mail and there is no response for about 10-20 seconds and then it kicks in.  As long as I stay in the current app, the keyboard operates normally.

I am also having this problem and it's not the fault of the batteries or restarting.  Strangely enough as I type this message, it works fine - after signing into apple, suddenly it's fine.  Is this some sort of back-door-apple-wants-to-track-you kind of thing?

I have resolved my issue.  I noticed that whenever I typed in any text box, everything slowed down and I got the spinning candy wheel of death.  By accident one day, I right clicked the text box after this occured and noticed in the pop up that "check spelling & grammer" was checked for Apple's spelling checker.  Since I run a system wide spelling application that I've used for years (when Apple did not offer one) I started to wonder if there was a conflict.  Everytime I encounter the problem with any text box, I checked Apple's default by right clicking and turned off Apple's speller.  VOILA  Problem solved.  Bad news is I had to do it to each text box in each website only once.  No problems since.  Now I just have to take the time to find Apple's speller and turn it off permanently for my situation.  So whether the issue is completely with Apple's speller app or there is a conflict when both spellers are "turned on," I don't know.  But this works in my situation.  Not a mouse or keyboard problem at all.
