Q: Am I married to the Cloud?
What purpose does it serve? I am retired, new iMac 27", a few ext HDs via USB3. OS10.9.4. Fast ISP connection.
Most of what I do is PP for DSLR. No unusual data storage needs. I tend to prefer simplicity.
What is this thing, how did it get there, can I control it, do I need it?
Aperture 3, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1), running an iMac

Unless you are using more than one device, “the cloud” is pretty much useless. You don’t have to enable iCloud, just Sign Out from it on the iCloud System Preferences.
Based on your description of what you have, the only thing I think it might be useful for is the Find My Mac feature and possibly the email account. If your Mac was stolen, you might be able to locate it through iCloud.
