Q: Saving scanned documents/photos

I have a Canon MG6450 scanner, which I truly despise, but I don't seem to be able to save the scanned stuff anywhere and open it without using Finder or Preview.

Disregarding the scanner doesn't do anything I find at all useful, where am I supposed to save the scans and what do I use to open them? If I save in pictures I can't open them using iPhoto, keynote, pages or any of the programs that arrived with the mac, despite being assured that I could. It's a real pain having to use finder because I can't remember all the dates used or filenames, obviously!

II also have a major problem with email because I haven't worked out how to use Apple's mail client - I'm really that stupid - and hotmail is just the worst for compatibility issues, slowness and just being plain ugly. And nothing from my mac will upload so there's a real problem, I'm just glad I don't depend on it too much for my business, which would be bankrupt if I did.

Anyway, any help will be gratefully received, I really don't want to regret buying an iMac but they are nowhere near as intuitively easy to use as what's claimed, in fact not easy to use at all.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

This is all contained in the user manual, if you can't find it down load it from here:   MG6450 User Manual

The files are saved in the folder set up in Settings:

Thank you for the info although I just can't get on with the scanner at all - that's getting a hammer through it if PCWorld won't have it back - but it's the general issue of saving pdf or similar and how to open them without going through the exhausting and frustrating process of finder/preview.

    Any suggestions?

Really at wits' end now, I thought Apple stuff was supposed to be easy to use; which is why I wasted £1200 on one, mainly because it didn't say microsoft anywhere on the packaging. Not sure which is worse now.

OK. So, for some reason I don't quite understand, you don't want to open the scans with Finder or Preview... Could you please explain then how you expect it to work? Because Preview is by default the application that opens pdf's.

What do you want to open these scans with?

Disregarding the scanner doesn't do anything I find at all useful

If we regard this, why do you have this scanner?

where am I supposed to save the scans

    Wherever you want to.

Your Documents folder is a good location.

If I save in pictures I can't open them using iPhoto, keynote, pages or any of the programs that arrived with the mac,

    Why not?

It sounds like your issue is you just purchased a Macintosh computer and don't really have any idea how to use it.

This is where I really struggle, because I just expect it to work: every other machine I've had goes something like save file in a particular location, be it pictures, documents, whatever. Then when I  wanted to open file simply do so from saved folder.

Now I can't open them by double clicking from any of the apps; pages, iphoto or anything else. Only by quick view to open in preview can I do this, then unable to share, save or edit. There must be a way but if there is it's a mystery to me.

It should be working this way. What happens when you try to open a file that has been scanned?

What format are you scanning the files into? PDF, PNG, JPEG, TIFF, etc.

Also, you don’t “Open” picture files in iPhoto. iPhoto is a photo organizing app. You import pictures into the iPhoto Library and access them from within the iPhoto application.

Have you tried scans using Applications/Image Capture?

Yes, this is how it works.

    So do this.

How are you "double clicking from any of the apps"?

Double click will open it with the default app.

Otherwise, open the app, the File > Open and select the file you want. You don't "double click from any app".

I've been away for a couple of weeks but thank you for your replies, still no nearer to being able to use saved scans or indeed any pdf file that I've downloaded.

Now I know what iPhoto is for I can ignore that completely - thank you Barney  - but still impossible to open pdf files with anything other than finder, provided I can find it in the first place! Even then, the option of sharing it is not usually there, and certainly no way of inserting any meaningful text by way of explanation of why a recipient should get a message with the title "This message has no content".

Helpful replies really will be gratefully received (and no, I have no idea how to copy and paste highlighted text on the forum either) but I don't need to be told I have no idea how to use a £1200 mac. Because that's why I'm asking and what the support community is for, so please, just a little shared knowledge because this computer just won't do anything I expect.

I've read the comments above, no good asking me "why not?" because I don't know, only that it should be possible, so I ask again: why can't I open a saved pdf file with pages, keynote or numbers? Or share them? Or attach to an email? Or decide where they're saved? Or decide what the file name is?

It can't be that difficult, I don't need to be subjected to ridicule, simply assisted and maybe I'll be assured a purchase for my business is going to enhance it and not just make a big hole in my accounts ledger.

    Do This:

Open Spotlight and type the words "Image Capture" in it without the quotes, this will be the result:

    Screen Shot 2014-08-15 at 12.01.31.png

Click on Image Capture (to the right of "Top Hit") and Image Capture will open.

You will use Image Capture to scan and save (you will choose where to save) documents. To open any of the documents you can (a) double click the file in Finder, right click the file and choose Open or Open With.

Preview will open with the file you chose.

Thank you for the info, that's almost what I've been doing but there's still no way of opening a saved file without finder?

It's all very well taking so much time out of a working day to track down a file then open it in something that won't allow me to email, there must be another way.

If this is the only way all I can say is I've wasted well over a grand sterling, and there's no alternative because windows is only marginally worse.

Somebody pleeeeaaase tell me I can open a scanned image simply by double clicking on a saved file.

By the way, I worked out to save a file in documents - thank you all for your courtesy - but no matter what, the swine will not open unless this ridiculous method is used. I say ridiculous, because on something far less expensive and less beautiful I simply double clicked from "pictures", "documents" or whatever and hey presto.

For over ten years, no trouble at all.

    Some "upgrade".......

    I think it must be.

Trouble is, at less than seven months old, it's messing me and my business up now. I already had an applecare guy tell me it did something he never heard of before!

So should I take it back to the shop? I've been told I no longer qualify for free support from the apple geeks, which makes a nonsense of the warranty!!

    I am truly disappointed.
