Q: I can't seem to get restore from backup to work

I lost an entire feature film project in FCPX 10.1.2. Gulp.

I was trying to export to Blu Ray, then tried to just export the Blu Ray file to hard drive, i.e., I gave it 2 commands at almost the same time. My fault, but then FCPX started acting funny, so I forced quit and restarted FCPX.

When I rebooted, I discovered that the feature project is gone, but everything else is there... (the trailer and all the other project files, just the one project -- the big, most important one -- is not there).

So I tried to restore the library from the backup that was made an hour earlier. When I select it and then ask for the backup I get a spinning beach ball, but I am not sure if that is FCPX working away or is this FCPX just not able to do anything? Should I force quit again? I have a backup on another hard drive from the previous day, should I just go to that???

This library that I am trying to restore is a fairly big file, 1 TB, could that be what is taking a while? How long should I leave the beach ball spinning before giving up on it?  Thanks.

If you navigate in the Finder to the backup library and double click, what happens?

Haven't tried that, but I will.  Let me ask this:

Because I got so frustrated I went to the backup I had done on another hard drive the day before, and replaced the library for the project.  It was still copying when I left home.  This move basically cuts out an entire day of editing work (and I am towards the end so the changes were very finite and may be hard to remember when and where and what I did).

If I put in this backup library from the other hard drive, could I still go to the backups FCPX did at the end of yesterday to try to save all the changes I made?  i.e., could I try to use the backup made from the newer library that is no longer there on the day old library I have just put in place?  Does this make any sense?

I'm not clear what you mean by replace library.

Each FCP X backup library is independent. So you can have the original project and multiple backups of the original open at the same time. I'm referring to  the backup libraries that FCP X makes automatically.

I used a backup I made with Carbon Copy Cloner, i.e., I had a backup of the entire library on another hard drive, NOT the backup that FCPX made, I just couldn't get it to work (kept getting a spinning beach ball).

So when I navigate in the finder, what would the backup file look like?

By default, the Backups folder is stored in Movies in your Home folder. It's a date stamped bundle.

So I should navigate to that and then click on the update I want?  How long should it take to load?  That was sort of the issue I was having yesterday.  I'd click and then the beach ball would spin.  What is the normal way for this backup library to be loaded?  Should it take quite a while?

A backup library can be opened from the Finder or from the application's File menu. They're both considered normal.

It's always worth to do these 2 things while you are trying to restore things.

    1. Zip your backup library before you open it.

    2. "Show content" of your library and delete anything you don't need inside, such as transcoded media, rendered files or the sequences you no longer need.

I am trying to Relink Files.  It shows over 800 files need to be relinked for my feature film and when I push the "Locate" button I get a message that it is "Verifying files for compatibility,"  but it seems to be taking forever (over an hour already).  I keep asking if this is normal, should I just let it roll over night and not worry about it?  It seems this shouldn't take long.  There are over 3000 unlinked files for the entire library.  I just don't get it.  My fear is that I keep making things worse.

Since you're responding to jacko I'm assuming that you're not working with the FCP X  automatically generated backup libraries,  Whatever you're working with. I don't think you ant to be deleting things at this point.

Hi Russ, I did wind up using the backup file from FCPX.  It took quite a while for it to relink everything, hours (for some reason it took forever to find files that were .caf that I used from the FCPX effects, not sure why).  The only thing that is strange is that all the underwater shots that I had in the film are listed as "incompatible."  Something about the audio has to be the same as the way it was in the original file.  I didn't use any of the underwater audio for the obvious reasons (diver breathing, etc).  Anyway...

I ran out of time today (at work now), but later tonight I will try this:  at the same time I have open the version of the film with the unlinked "incompatible" underwater files, I will open a slightly older version of the film from the library from another hard drive where I have those underwater scenes already done the way I want them, then just copy/paste them into the newer version film that has the unlinked "incompatible" files.    Will this work?

As always, thanks for your help Russ.

This worked, I just went into the older back up version, copied what I needed to put back in the newer version of the film, and then pasted.  All is well and I am back to where I was.
