Q: Bootcamp doesn't work, again.

Hello everyone,

After repairing Bootcamp thanks to Loner T (i tested the next os x out).

I found the original size of my Machintosh HD partition. I was stupid enough to make the partition larger to the original size again.

Now Bootcamp is called Disk0s4. Could someone help me out?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.4), GHOSTING (and long shutdown issues)

Please download GPT fdisk - http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/

Please execute the following command (it will not make any changes to your system) and post the output. This should tell us if your NTFS filesystem is intact or not. Your GPT seems reasonable, but the MBR has been completely obliterated.

    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

    Thanks for replying Bob! I made a discussion about repairing bootcamp partition myself a day or two ago: Repairing Boot Camp after creating new partition Though this is a different problem caused by my stupidity to resize Macintosh HD to get the original amount of space;

It looks like your NTFS partition is corrupt.

You may also want to download http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk which will allow looking for deleted partitions and make image backups of data, if necessary.

Here is an example of running gdisk. Please post your output.

The second command 'b' will create a backup file containing your GPT, before any changes are made. I would recommend copying the backup file to an external USB drive.

    sudo gdisk /dev/disk0

    Password:

    GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.8.9

Warning: Devices opened with shared lock will not have their

    partition table automatically reloaded!

    Partition table scan:

      MBR: hybrid

      BSD: not present

      APM: not present

      GPT: present

Found valid GPT with hybrid MBR; using GPT.

    Command (? for help): p

    Disk /dev/disk0: 1954210120 sectors, 931.8 GiB

    Logical sector size: 512 bytes

    Disk identifier (GUID): 6ED0C429-00D1-4759-B50E-04B6FB80D0E3

Partition table holds up to 128 entries

First usable sector is 34, last usable sector is 1954210086

Partitions will be aligned on 8-sector boundaries

Total free space is 1293 sectors (646.5 KiB)

Number  Start (sector)    End (sector)  Size       Code  Name

       1              40          409639   200.0 MiB   EF00  EFI System Partition

       2          409640      1452940543   692.6 GiB   AF00  Customer

       4      1454211072      1954209791   238.4 GiB   0700  BOOTCAMP

    Command (? for help): b

Enter backup filename to save: MyGPTBackup

    The operation has completed successfully.

    Command (? for help): q

    You have two separate issues.

    1. A new Hybrid MBR needs to be created. Please read this - Windows 7 not bootable after upgrade and ask questions before your proceed.

    2. Once you have a Hybrid MBR in place, it would require you to do a Windows Repair - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/startup-repair-faq#1TC=windows-7

The worst case scenario is that you may lose your Windows partition.

Testdisk can help you look for missing partitions, so that may help you backup your windows data to an external drive.

Thanks! , is startup repair in windows 7 the same as automatic repair?? (i use windows 8.1)

Besides from apps and games i don't have very important files. (those a safely backed-up on an external hard-drive)

One thing I noticed is that you ran fdisk and gpt on disk0s4, not disk0. Can you run is again as sudo fdisk /dev/disk0 and sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0?

Running it on a specific slice will generate incorrect information.

    Looks much more reasonable.

    1. Does your OSX side work without any issues? (Verifies GPT #1 and GPT #2).

    2. If you use Command-R work if you power cycle the machine? (Verifies GPT #3). If the MAC goes to internet recovery (spinning globe), then your local Recovery HD is corrupted.

    3. If you use the ALT Key during power up and select Windows, and you get 'missing operating system', then a Windows repair should allow you to just fix that side.

    1. OS X works fine and smooth

    2. When i press command-r i it goes to the spinning globe. (after seeing the globe , i rebooted to back to OS X)

    3. Is startup repair in windows 7 the same as automatic repair?? (i use windows 8.1)

If so i can create a bootable win8 USB from my original windows 8 install disk.
