Jul 28, 2014 9:10 AM in response to ranoucheeby venetsanos, about mail;you are talking about gmail? or all the mails?
check this link https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/gmail/97JvstqOXTs
i have a seagate backup plus desktop and i can access the files(also have maverick).is the drive formatted on ntfs?if it is you can only read not write.you need seagate ntfs driver for mac http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/ntfs-driver-for-mac-os-master-dl/
otherwise if its formatted on exfat or fat32 or mac os extended (journaled) you should see him and have the read-write access

Jul 28, 2014 9:18 AM in response to venetsanosby ranouchee,Thank you for the prompt response.
I am talking about the Mac Mail program (titled Mail).
Seagate drive worked until a new drive was put onto my Mac which had 10.9.4 Maverick version - Seagate claim it is this version of Maverick that is causing the access problem.

Jul 28, 2014 9:30 AM in response to ranoucheeby venetsanos, you are welcome.
let me rephrase that;you are experiencing problems with mac mail but with ALL the mail accounts (e.g gmail, yahoo, hotmail etc)?
about seagate;its really odd...can you find the previous driver from seagate site?

My mail only goes back two weeks - anything older than that keeps disappearing.
Are you using OS X's Mail app, or something else?
Are the accounts in question configured as POP, IMAP, or Exchange, or something else?
The Seagate problem is better addressed in a separate question. No drivers are required to use an external backup hard disk drive, and if you installed any I strongly recommend you uninstall and do not use them. Format the volume using Disk Utility as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". Do not use NTFS or anything else unless you intend to use that volume with a PC.

Jul 28, 2014 1:28 PM in response to ranoucheeby Joe Bailey,John Galt's answer abut the Seagate drive sounds correct. Prior to Mavericks there was a third party driver for NTFS files that was frequently installed. This was dropped in Mavericks.
Regarding the files disappearing in Mail, the identity of the email provider (me.com, gmail.com, yahoo.com, may be critical to determining the source of the problem. The account type (POP, IMAP, GOOGLE IMAP, AOL, Microsoft Exchange, etc.) may be equally important in determining the problem.
As far as the settings in Mail are concerned…
- Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors.
- Check the behavior settings for…
- Delete sent messages when
- Delete Junk messages when
- Permanently erase deleted messages when
- Check each and every rule
Just because it worked previously does not mean that something did not get inadvertently changed in the upgrade, or your email provider has not changed something in the meantime. Some providers are rather notorious for doing things like that with no notice.

Jul 28, 2014 1:36 PM in response to ranoucheeby notcloudy,Just FYI - WD drives get a thumbs up as backup for Mac - I have 2 I purchased at local staples - 1 for time machine, 1 for full library backup - both reinitialized for Mac with no problem (Staples only carried Windows in store).
