Q: YouTube videos will not play

When I click a YouTube link on my MacBook Pro running OS X 10.9.4, the link takes me to YouTube, but the videos will not play.

 

When I open YouTube on its own to find the video, I get sound and no video or it won't let me play (no play arrow).

 

Can anyone lead me in the right direction?  Thanks!

    Your Mac has been corrupted by CleanMyMac.


    There is no way to reverse the effects of having used CleanMyMac2, and the developer's uninstallation instructions are ineffective. Only MacPaw, its developer, can know the reason for that, but I can think of two possibilities: either they are purposefully leaving components behind for reasons known only to them, or they simply don't know what they're doing. Neither one of those possibilities is particularly comforting for the user. EtreCheck does not reveal the presence of these components.

     

    Reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system.


    Follow the applicable recovery procedure below:

     

    • If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
    • If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
      • The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
      • When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
      • Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.

     

    To erase and install Mavericks read: OS X Mavericks: Erase and reinstall OS X

     

    To migrate your essential documents read: OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks and follow the procedure under Time Machine or other disk migration.

    Besides CleanMyMac2, a Kaspersky "Internet Security" product is installed. It is capable of nothing beneficial and your Mac cannot operate properly with it installed. Uninstall it according to its instructions. Erasing and reconfiguring your Mac as detailed above will obviate that concern.

    Thank you very much.  I wiped the drive and reinstalled OS X as I did not have a Time Machine backup.

     

    It went through the New Computer startup and I created a new user.  When it asked to migrate data, it did not have the option of another user, just another PC or Mac.  So I went through the rest of the setup and now I've got my desktop open.

     

    How do I get to Setup Assistant now to migrate my files from the previous user?  Thank you!

    PS--the instructions above are a little different that the ones that showed-up in my email.  My email states:

    So I did not go and make a Time Machine Backup before erasing.  Will that be a problem?

    Do you still have the old account? Or do you have only the new one you just created? If you wiped the disk clean with no back up drive or another Mac with the data, it is most likely gone.

    You should always have at least one back up, I keep 2 time machine, and Carbon Copy Cloner.


    If you still have the original account, you may be able to move the data manually.

    Some disk partition configurations may result in the OS X installer reporting that it could not create a Recovery System. In these situations, even if you are permitted to continue the install, you may want to quit the installation and create an external, bootable OS X hard drive with a Recovery System, first. You can continue your OS X upgrade on your computer's startup drive after creating an external Recovery System.

    • Your storage device must have at least 13 GB available (after formatting) to install OS X Lion or later and a Recovery partition.
    • These steps erase and reformat the storage device. This article instructs you on setting up a storage device to use the GUID partition scheme and the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, which are required to install OS X and a Recovery partition on your external storage device. You should back up any important files that are on the device to a different drive.
    • This procedure installs a version of OS X that is compatible with the Mac it was created with. Using this OS X system with a different Mac model may produce unpredictable results.
    • Your computer's serial number is sent to Apple as part of this process to help authenticate your request to download and install OS X Lion.

    Additional Information

    Please note that OS X Recovery must be present on the computer's startup volume in order to use FileVault 2. Using RAID partitions or a non-standard Boot Camp partition on the startup disk may prevent OS X from installing a local Recovery system. See "OS X: Some features of Mac OS X are not supported for the disk (volume name)" for more information.

    OS X Recovery includes a version of Safari with links to resources on www.apple.com. This version of Safari can be used to access help resources at Apple's website and elsewhere on the Internet. The network requirements listed above also apply to the version of Safari included with OS X Recovery. Plugins and Safari Extensions cannot be added to the version of Safari included with OS X Recovery.

    This problem occurs from Safari Extension: Kaspersky URL Advisor: Version: 8.0.5. Not from Anti-Virus Kaspersky.
