Q: iMessage not syncing between iPad and iPhone

Hey all,

So, I have a 3GS and an iPad 2, both on iOS 5.0. One of the advertised iMessage features is that you can start the conversation on one device, and finish on the other. However, messages I receive on my iPad don't show up on my iPhone, and vice versa.

I've heard that this has to do with the Caller ID defaulting to the device's phone number on the iPhone, but I'm not 100% sure if this is the case or not. I've also heard of other people having success of this syncing between iPhone and iPad, so I'm really not sure.

Just wondering if anyone has any insight as to why iMessage isn't syncing between my iPad and my iPhone that are both signed into the same Apple ID/iCloud account?

Thanks,
Behn

Not sure if I missed this in the above discussion, but I discovered that changing your password can also mess up the ability to sync between devices. Once both were on the same page, and I was able to re-enter my info into the appropriate slots, messages started syncing once again.

I had this issue for over a month and went back to my iphone and in the settings>imessage, my cell number was all in the second box and the area code box was empty.  I changed it to put the area code in the right box and the last 7 in the other box and it fixed everything to sync between all devices.

Man I've been pulling my hair out over this for several hours and this seems to have fixed it.

I setup everything right on my ipad and the messages window was empty.  I expected it to just automatically populate it with the conversations from my iphone.  Nope.

I noticed that a new conversation I started with my brother from my ipad in an attempt to see if it showed up on my phone worked.

After clearing out all the conversations on my iphone, a new conversation started from my iphone shows up now on the ipad and continuing the messaging with the recipient from the ipad syncs now to the phone.

    Good deal.

SSuddenly i do not get messages on my ipad but they go only to my iPhone 5s.  They will not sync and I cannot send messages from my iPad to a friend who does not have an iPhone -  but I used to be able to do this.  What is going on?  How do I fix this.

    thank you

Just started happening to me today. Not sure what happened but iPhone 6 messages stopped showing up on ipad and vice versa. Signed out of iCloud on iPad as suggested. Also made sure on iPhone the same emIl addresess are selected as contact addresses. This was not done before. After repeating signing out out of iPad, it worked all of a sudden. Messages sent from iPhone showed up instantly on iPad again. Don't know why it stopped earlier and which action resolved the problem. There seem to be many of these inexplicable behaviors with apple products theses days. They just don't work like they used to. many times I had to reboot my phone to get it to behave again. iOS 9 better have real stability improvement.

IOS 9.1. All of a sudden my iPhone 4 wouldn't sync with my iPad 4. I noticed that my mobile number was no longer showing in iMessage>Send&Receive on the iPad and no email address on the iPhone. So I added my email address to the iPhone and all of a sudden it synced with the iPad and asked for confirmation to link my mobile number on the iPad. Problem fixed. Non-iPhones or people not using iMessage no longer show up red and messages are syncing between devices.

HHad the same problem. Went to the iPhone, setting, messages, then text message forwarding. Turned on the iPad, it send a code to the iPad, entered the code back into the phone.... Perfect it works.  Don't know why it stopped in the first place!! Works great now
