Feb 16, 2014 5:43 PM in response to MacsVadby robert rose 50,best thing you can do is get an SSD, i bought a 500SSD from samsung, was about 400 for installation with a certifed mac tech, this keeps the warranty, i have a midyear 2011 macbook pro 13 inches, and the speed blows me away, the MS word boots up just like it was always on, this is by far the best thing you can do. if you don't have a lot of hard drive used, then the 256 is around $200.00, I got carbon copy clone, now I have the hard drive saved away, and the SSD in my macbook pro,

Jun 30, 2014 4:08 AM in response to AppleFixitGuyby Nowaii,So after having a similar problem as zen_kv, I tried the SMC reset as AppleFixItGuy suggested. At first glance, my macbook did seem to have speeded up a bit and the applications ran better than before. But now I have noticed that at every startup, the screen briefly flickers before the user account screen appears, which it did not do before. Then after logging in, it takes a while before the dock and my files on my desktop appear. Another problem is that spotlight indexes my macbook every single time whenever I have just started up my computer. It's like every startup reboots the whole system over and over again. Does anybody know how I can solve this problem? Thanks in advance.

Aug 7, 2014 4:45 AM in response to zen_kvby LuckySparkles,This is amazing! I did it because not only was my computer running slow but the email inbox was not working properly, the inbox would show the emails but not the latest ones, when I clicked to look at sent items, that was blank and when I clicked back to look at the inbox again it was blank and would not collect.
Doing this little magic trick has changed my computer back to an almost new one! I must however admit I did not press the Power button at the same time as I pressed the Left shift key with the option(alt) and ctrl keys.
It still worked!
thank you soooo much!

Aug 14, 2014 4:07 AM in response to zen_kvby loopyeyes,What AppleFixItGuy has described is an SMC reset. I am surprised he didn't name the procedure. Anyways, there is also another reset called PRAM reset that sometimes can be as effective as the SMC reset.
Instructions to both resets and a few other interesting tips including one about repairing disk permissions are available at this post I found about MacBook Pro running slow problems. Quite useful and certainly helped me fix my MBP's performance issues.

Aug 14, 2014 5:36 AM in response to zen_kvby LuckySparkles,This worked for me the first day. The next day my computer was back to normal and actually getting worse. Not sure if there is a better answer.

Aug 30, 2014 6:50 AM in response to AppleFixitGuyby hrichmon,I'm trying to get on board your train of fans, but my MBP won't punch my ticket. I tried posting this fix on Instagram for a Karma boost, but still nothing.
I have tried this a dozen times and tried the PRAM trick. Both went as described, but neither worked. If anything I would say the problem is much worse. This is my fourth time leaving this comment because the page freezes. Also I am now typing faster than the letters appear (I'm not fast).
I have a 13" MBP from 2011, OSX 10.9.2, 4GB DDR, 2.3GHz i7, and 300GB free of my 500GB HD.
Though it's newer, this computer has been my secondary computer behind my iMac (circa 2009?) because leopard runs like a champ! This isn't right
Obviously I am blaming mtn lion. When I installed it it messed up my creative suite and iPhoto so bad I had to delete both and reinstall both (My pictures from before the upgrade still won't open). This is also when my computer became slower, and got demoted to just being my FFB computer which it now can't do either.
In my PC days I'd try a reformat. Is that possible or a good idea with a mac? I'm hesitant to invest more money in this disappointment, but is a new HDD the answer?
Please help. Thanks!

Oct 21, 2014 1:22 AM in response to AppleFixitGuyby royer23,holy wow, this worked! I too have tried different ways to speed up my macbook pro without having to buy new ram and this seemed to do the trick.... only like 3 months later of frustration with a super slow and sluggish computer. Wow, my photoshop and Dreamweaver takes only seconds to open and load my files now .
thanks!

500GB HD with 105gb free prior to this posting

Oct 21, 2014 3:39 AM in response to DA_BOMB1998zby MacKing ,It resets the SMC, ( SYSTEM MANAGEMENT CONTROLLER). A part of the logic board (Mother Board) .. or circuit chip thingy where everything comes together. Which helps control a lot of the power for the computer.
Thanks - An Apple Technician
