Try a reset hold down the home/power button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the phone to boot back up, see if that helps.

Try closing the mail app then double tap the home button and when the icons appear along the bottom of the screen hold the mail app at the bottom of the screen until the x appears and then tap on the x.  After that tap on the home button once and open the mail app and try sending again

I know this thread is a bit old, but just in case anyone finds it here is the solution:

    1) Put the iPhone in Airplane mode

    2) Open the Mail app

    3) Go to the Outbox

    4) Click Edit, click the circle next to the stuck message to select it

    5) Click Delete

    6) Take the iPhone out of Airplane mode

    7) Return to the Mail app.  :-)

I have had the same problem for a couple of days

I have solved the problem, I had tried uninstalling

email account and reinstalling with no luck.

I checked all settings which were right. I then looked at

outbox settings and the name mobile.charter.net was

correct however I deleted the name and typed it back in the same name

    this corrected the trouble.

Based upon the number of incidents of this I see posted on the internet, much less the number of incidents I see of this in my own company where I work in the Telecommunications group and support 1000 company owned iPads and iPhones, it is clear that this issue with an email getting stuck in the outbox of an iOS device and eating data is an iOS issue. That said, does Apple have ANY plans to resolve the issue?

The best way to fix this problem is to delete the email from iPhone and add as new again. IPhone will take care of the process by snap. It took only 1 minutes to fix it on my iPhone 5.

I had the same issue and this resolved it easily, thank you!

One more question, is there an HT or another Apple article as a reference? Is it a quote from an official Apple document?

I have iPhone. My outbox is stuck with the circular spinner spinning in outbox. It keeps sending 10 out a day to my mom (spamming her over daily). I want to delete it and cannot. I can't click on this. I cannot swipe it. It is just there spinning away and I can't do anything.  What should I do?? thanks anyone!

Hi! I Had the exact same problem as you did. What helped me was a combined fix of all the above.

    1) Put your iPhone/iPad in airplane mode

    2) Fully switch-off your phone

    3) Turn it back on

    4) When prompted enter your access code, but don't unlock your SIM

    5) Your iPhone/iPad is booted

    6) Go to your mail app

    7) Go to Outbox

    8) You should be able to click on edit in the top-right corner

    9) Click on the circle in front of your e-mail

    10) Delete

You can reactivate cellular and wifi data at this point, turning off airplane mode should prompt you to enter your sim.

    Good luck!
