There is no official way, but you can follow Old Toads advice from this thread:

Unfortunately that method doesn't work with iPhoto 9 (11).  They've changed the organization of the library.

Amazing after all the complaints that it still not an option to turn it off.

    Still looking for another option.

That is not a feature of iPhoto - suggest to Apple - iPhoto Menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback.

Still nothing then? The fans on my iMac just came on full blaze, again, because I had left iPhoto running in the background. I keep seeing the little spinner next to the Faces item, despite me never having bothered with the silly feature. Yet it proudly tells me I have 10.001 unrecognized faces. Like I'm really going to go through all of them??

I really hope Yosemite's new photos app (unfortunately missing from the beta) is going to shy away from all these features and just give us something that excels at showing us however many pictures we have in a quick and easy way.

iCloud syncing, basic editing and blazing fast photo browsing, nothing more, please?

    Start of solution:

I did some digging in the prefs of iPhoto and found out the following. This is how you can disable (turn off) Face detection, without deleting faces found so far (just in case you want to restart processing at another time):

    1. Quit iPhoto

    2. Open Terminal Application (Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)

    3. Type the following (exactly as is):

    defaults write com.apple.iPhoto PKFaceDetectionEnabled 0

    (then return)

    4. - Start iPhoto - Faces stops getting on your nerves...

If you ever need to re-enable faces, just do the same again and replace the 0 with 1.

I have 756 faces in iPhoto I DON'T WANT! That's what my question is.

Did you try the method by lopezio?

If you hate faces that much why not use another application that does not have that feature to manage your photos.  There are out there.

This is crazy that I can't get rid of naming every person.  I have thousands of photos in my library and now they expect me to name everyone person.  No. I don't want to and I should not have to do this.  I'm so angry.  Apple has screwed up iphoto and itunes in my opinion. Great apps initially and now they are a pain in the butt.  Apple used to be the design company that got "ease of use, etc."  This is not a design plus. This is a technology person gone crazy with a capability that he/she could create so they did it and everyone hates but they won't let you turn it off.  These continual missteps by Apple will move me close to leaving them.  I'm getting as frustrated with using Apple software as I was with IBM.  Might be time for Google to come in and rock some software developers worlds.

I'm a bit confused. I am running iPhoto and do not see anything that requires me to name people in my photos. Am I missing something? If I open the Info panel, it has the Faces option showing, but I have never had to use it. When is this requirement to name the person coming up?

    Cheers,

If you want to kill the Faces recognition feature in iPhoto completely try the fix that user lopenzio posted here:

That will kill face recognition entirely.  Use at your own risk.

Or go into the Info pane and close the Faces section:

Apple don't expect or require you to do anything. If you can't understand simple software I don't see how google will help you.

In Photos app, unlike aperture, the option to turn off face recognition has been removed.

Photos detects faces in all imported images immediately upon import.

User has the option to name the photos and combine face patterns

Photos app is deeply integrated in the OS

Regardless of iCloud settings for Photos, it constantly connects to Apple's servers

Apple has removed any human readable file that would allow manual disabling or removing of the database

Given Apple's strong public stance on privacy, I am very disappointed in their design choices; removal of user choices!

I have not found a practical alternative for photo organization. Aperture it is for now.
