Q: isight is unstable working on FaceTime causing mac crashing and do not get audio when running on screenflow. Please help?

my external isight device is causing instability running on FaceTime causing the screen to freeze and then the mac to crash also I do not get my audio when running on screen flow from the device as it has a built in microphone.

I have carried out an SMC reset as advised by the community and have also gone into system preference and selected isight in sound input menu.

I am running on mavericks 10.9.4 and don't know how to fix this to get the isight device to start working without crashing the mac for FaceTime and to work properly with audio on other applications screen flow, FaceTime, etc

Please can you help?

Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

You will need to troubleshoot your old external Sight, your cables and any Firewire adapters you are using, your internet connection, your FaceTime software, and your user account to find which is causing the trouble.

The easiest place to start is to test your old external iSight using the suggestions in http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html.

The quickest test will be to try your iSight on known-working Mac(s) with known-working cabling/connectors using known-working apps like QuickTimeX or Photo Booth that is not internet connected.  (You can test internet speed and quality separately using other connected apps or http://www.speedtest.net/.)

If you do not find the problem easily, use the suggestions from Apple's "How to Troubleshoot iSight" to determine whether your problem is application or user-specific.  Be sure to test more than one Apple camera app in more than one user account.  If you have only one non-guest account, add a user account for testing.  Don't use the "Guest User" account for testing.

If your problem continues and you have not already done so, restart Mac and then download and apply the OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo) and then test again. If the problem continues, you can reinstall Mac OS X and test one more time to see if the problem is resolved.

I think you mean iSight Updater 1.0.3, but that updater is not applicable to your 10.9.4 system.

As stated in "Requirements for iSight 1.0.3" on that page, Updater 1.0.3 should only be needed if you are using "Mac OS X v10.3.7-10.3.9

If you are still having trouble after using all relevant suggestions offered here, I suggest you consider a compatible USB webcam like one of those listed here.

If you'd rather keep your old external iSight, see out-of-warranty iSight Service Options or contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
