Q: Airplay mirroring broke in 10.9.2

i just updated to 10.9.2 and now when i try and airplay mirror to my Apple TV, it sends the audio but just shows a black screen and i can't drag anything to it. It doesn't show any of the options for external displays in the displays section of System Preferences.

Any ideas? i tried reapplying the combo update with no luck

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

    I fixed my problem removing

    Accusys6xxxx.kext

    and i unistalled splashtop streamer.

    rebooted and airplay started working.

I am not sure which fixed the issue, but after i rebooted, i reinstalled splashtop and everything seems to still be working

I have solved the problem of no Airplay mirroring at least after having tried almost every advice in this discussion. None of the above suggestions helped. By coincidence and out of pure despair I tried the following:

I opened the folder "LaunchDaemons" which I found in > HD/Library/LaunchDaemons and put the whole content to the Trash (you need PW!). Then I restarted my iMac and I noticed the Airplay mirroring symbol in my menu at once. After that I got  every LaunchDaemon one by one out of the Trash and put it back to the original LaunchDaemons folder and restarted my iMac after each step. The culprit was found at last after more than 20 restarts. In my case it was the following:

    com.parallels.desktop.launchdaemon.plist

Maybe this will help some of you people.

    Good luck!

    Thanks johnsorci!

SplashTop did me too. After sorting extensions by whom they were signed, I found two unsigned extensions looking suspect at the bottom of my list. I Googled them and found that both came from SplashTop. I had purchased, installed, and uninstalled SplashTop ages ago. Those two extensions stayed after whatever it was I did to uninstall the app. Maybe it would have worked for me to run sudo just delete those two extensions. However, the uninstall script seemed like a more sure way to stick a wooden stake in the heart of the beast. It's now dead and my airplay is back.

Thanks also to all of you who have contributed to this thread... including those who want to hold Apple responsible for the work of third parties. 8-)

Anyone suffering from this issue, please do the following:

    1. Open up System Information (located in /Applications/Utilities, or option+click the apple logo in the menu bar and select it).

    2. On the left side bar locate "Extensions" (you'll have to scroll down a bit)

    3. Look in the list of extensions for "APExtFrameBuffer" as shown in the screenshot.

    Screen Shot 2014-03-01 at 11.58.56 AM.png

Also look for "AirParrotDriver". I had two of them listed, one in /System/Library/Extensions and one in /Library/Extensions.

    Screen Shot 2014-03-01 at 12.13.56 PM.png

    4. If any of these items are found, open Terminal (in Applications>Utilities) and copy/paste these (respectively):

    sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/APExtFramebuffer.kext

    sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AirParrotDriver.kext

    sudo rm -rf /Library/Extensions/APExtFramebuffer.kext

    sudo rm -rf /Library/Extensions/AirParrotDriver.kext

If they yield an error, then the file probably doesn't exist. Any one of these could cause the issue, so make sure they are all deleted.

    5. Enter your administrative password when prompted.

    6. Restart your computer.

    Thanks, now it works!

After much digging around I worked out that my new mac didn't mirror because of Splashtop. Splashtop has a blank screen extension that turns your mac's screen black when accessing the Mac remotely. All I had to do is uninstall it from the Splashtop preferences and BINGO! Mirroring started working again!

I hope this helps those still searching.

    Hello,

I have problem with Apple TV (3th gen) and iMac (late 2012, Mavericks). When I want to turn on mirroring get a black screen on TV. Sound works fine...

I reinstalled the system and when OS X was clear mirrorng works great, but after restoring a backup again doesn't work

So the problem is in some file. How reset settings "mirroring/apple tv" things or how fix it?

    Airparrot works normal.

    Please help!

Mavericks mirorring wont work when any 3rd party programs, that do a similar thing, are also installed. You have to remove any apps and all their files before Mavericks Mirrioring will work. All the answers are in this thread.

Thank you so much! Airparrot I installed after the problem with airplay, because I needed mirroring. Now I removed airparrot and... airdisplay (I forgot about it, becuase it did not use...)

    NOW WORKS!

    Really thank YOU

I just want to report that I am having the same issue with this. I'm running 10.9.3 on a mid 2012 macbook pro, and an apple tv 3 wired to a 2014 airport extreme. What happens is when I select airplay mirrioring wether it be extended or actual mirrioring I can tell right away wether Its going to work or not. My second screen pops up but it moves at about a frame a minute, consistently, never getting any better. The ONLY thing I have found to get it back to normal is restarting the mac, restarting the atv does nothing. So some kind of process or service must start going hawire while the computer is sitting there running, or upon waking up because it is only after my laptop has been on for a while or opened and closed a few times. I have tried to use activity monitor to check but I am not sure what to look for. Just to clarify, im just trying to use the built in mirrioring, not airparrot or anything like that. I have never installed any of that. ever. I dont run many applications and the mirrioring used to be flawless for me up until 10.9.2 and still hasnt been resolved in 10.9.3. Apple needs to get back on its game, this is just too stupid to let happen between their OWN products.

I also got this finally fixed! My culprit was Splashtop Streamer. Running the uninstaller wasn't enough, so I followed the instructions found from here: https://support-splashtoppersonal.splashtop.com/entries/23968158-Unable-to-unins tall-or-update-Splashtop-Streamer

Check the fourth comment to find the steps to make sure everything is gone.

Lets start a list for display streaming apps that prevent airplay from working properly. Their kexts must be removed for airplay to work.

    So far we have:

    • Air Display
    • Air Parrot
    • Splashtop Streamer
    • DisplayPad
    • Screen recycler
    • Screens by Edovia (removing "EdoviaVirtualDisplay.kext" fixed it for me, but of course now I can't remotely connect to my computer)

If you discover a new one, please copy/paste this message along with your addition. Thanks.
