Q: Saving scanned documents/photos

I have a Canon MG6450 scanner, which I truly despise, but I don't seem to be able to save the scanned stuff anywhere and open it without using Finder or Preview.

Disregarding the scanner doesn't do anything I find at all useful, where am I supposed to save the scans and what do I use to open them? If I save in pictures I can't open them using iPhoto, keynote, pages or any of the programs that arrived with the mac, despite being assured that I could. It's a real pain having to use finder because I can't remember all the dates used or filenames, obviously!

II also have a major problem with email because I haven't worked out how to use Apple's mail client - I'm really that stupid - and hotmail is just the worst for compatibility issues, slowness and just being plain ugly. And nothing from my mac will upload so there's a real problem, I'm just glad I don't depend on it too much for my business, which would be bankrupt if I did.

Anyway, any help will be gratefully received, I really don't want to regret buying an iMac but they are nowhere near as intuitively easy to use as what's claimed, in fact not easy to use at all.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

If they can be opened from a stock apple program and subsequently attached to email I'd be really happy to hear how. Guess this is what I've been trying to find out all along really, just hadn't encountered anyone with this much kindness or patience before.

You don't need to open a photo or any file to email it.

Open Mail, create a new email the drag the file to the email.

How do you do that highlighted cut and paste stuff? should be my next question.

Yes, I can use that to open image capture, I'm still stuck with what to do after saving files, as there is still no way I can email files from preview.

You are getting very confusing, what do you mean by 'email files' I assume that you mean files (of any type) that you wish to send by email, if that is correct they are called attachments and may not be larger than the maximum size your email provider allows, eg: iCloud email will not allow files larger than 20MB to be sent. Other email providers (gmail etc) have different limits, it's good to know what yours are. Attaching files is simple (and there are many ways)

And I need to point out that progress is being made, now you have located Spotlight and Image Capture when before you couldn't.

So tell me what you are trying to achieve.

Think I may have worked some of this out, and thank you for your assistance!

I was trying to find out how I could access a file, be it pdf, dock, tiff etc and email it to a client. I should apologise if I've not made myself very clear, it's what happens when confusion/desperation sets in and who hasn't felt that? Think the problem started when I couldn't open saved files from the standard programs supplied, hence kept getting messages from the program telling me it couldn't do anything with files.

Now, thanks in no small part to your help, I've managed to open files from finder, which arranges them in whatever folder they were saved in and, Apple being Apple, they open automatically with no fuss at all. Now, the confusion set in when the share option disappeared from the top pane alongside help, file, edit etc. and I hadn't noticed the little send button with a curly arrow.

    Bingo!!

I think what made everything terrible was that I have grown used to MS stuff which, let's face it, is rubbish - hence shelling out for this thing of beauty with completely different OS and techniques.

After six months I'm still struggling to find ways to use the iMac to anywhere near its potential but fall foul of the one-way means by which computer stuff works: my iPhone and mac will open anything in any format but, being a plodder, I haven't bothered to change email account and limp along with hotmail/outlook which is just horrible and won't attach anything with even the slightest  sniff of Apple.

Csound1 you are a star, I can't thank you enough for your patience and help. All I need do now is figure out how to merge mail to rid myself of hotmail forever: I'm told gmail works with pages etc. but have no idea how to set up a cloud or apple mail account if such a thing exists. Maybe I'll try a different thread, I can't be alone in being a techno biff.....

Ok, so now I'm fully assured I've bought the right machine, hopefully no one will get too bored if there's something else I don't "get" in future.

    Thanks guys, a million.

    Simon

You can also find the file in the Finder then right click > Share > email.

This opens the Mail app and creates a new email with the file attached.

If you are looking to change email providers I will strongly caution you against Gmail!

You have a Mac, and iCloud compatible apps, why would you not use iCloud email (it works with a Mac better than most, maybe better than all) and the additional services are excellent.

iCloud email is free, secure, reliable and you won't have Google reading your email and selling it to anyone who will pay.

If you need help setting that up, please ask.
