If the USB connection between your device and computer is interrupted, you may be unable to update or restore.
To narrow down the issue, you can also change up your hardware:
- Use the USB cable that came with your device, or a different Apple USB cable.
- Plug your cable into a different USB port directly on your computer. Don't plug it into your keyboard.
- Try a different computer.
- If necessary, resolve any further issues with the USB connection, then with your security software.
If you're still seeing the error message, check for hardware issues by following the next section.

- Check that your security software and settings aren't preventing your device from communicating with the Apple update server.

Aug 15, 2014 4:52 PM in response to pete1626by deggie,How does you breaking your wife's iPhone by exposing it to moisture make it Apple's fault that it broke?
Unless you are going to buy one of the phones designed to be water RESISTANT you will have the same result with any phone.
Man up and take responsibility for it.

Sep 22, 2014 3:52 AM in response to pete1626by _schristo,Had this same issue. As suggested here, I managed to restore it by connecting it to a USB hub rather than directly to a computer. Hope it helps.
