Q: Mac Pro Late 2013 and Samsung 4k monitor problem

I have the new Samsung 28" 4k screen (U28D590D) and it has tearing along the right edge when used with displayport. Any way to fix that? I tried different cables (all DisplayPort 1.2 complient) to be sure and have narrowed the issue to the Mac Pro. The HDMI works fine tho only @30hz so is a bit laggy in normal interaction. There is no way to turn on Multi-stream as indicated and I hope it isnt that this screen will never work.

    Small Update:

    I reverted to 10.9.5 beta + Joevt ovveride.

    Screen is reporting 50Hz (which is good), UI is fluid.

    But screen is stil getting black from time to time, which is really annoying.

    I'm getting a new miniDP-DP cable. If the results are the same, it might be a faulty screen...

    It's the same with the ASUS: you'll have to enable DisplayPort 1.2 in the menus:

    Menu : System Setup : DisplayPort Stream : DP1.2 (ou DP1.1)

    The tilt/swivell/rotate stand was the reason I chose the Asus.

    I have learned a lot from you guys but I still appear to be missing something. I have a PB287Q (ie 28a3) and a generic 1080P display. I am using Textwrangler.

    Using dmolrub's suggestions I created a new file called DisplayProductID-28a3 in /System/Library/Displays/Overrides/DisplayVendorID-469/.

    Taking note of joevt's comments, I copied and pasted his entries for the 28a3 version over the top of the contents of the file and saved.

    I did note that joevt always mentions that he had removed the serial numbers from the EDID's but I don't understand the significance of this statement.

    I have rebooted and noted with SwitchResX that there is a new entry Current Resolutions that says 3840x2160, 50Hz PAL which looks perfect to me as I live in Australia and PAL is what we use. When I select this resolution the PB287Q goes black, there is a lot of blinking but then nothing and it remains blank. I then select 3840x2160 30Hz NTSC using SwitchResX and I get my display back again.

    I suspect I am doing something basic incorrectly. Any help would be appreciated. My cable works fine on my Windows machine at 3840x2160 60Hz.

    The EDID contains a serial number which has zero significance. I just decided not to leave someone else's serial number in the override. It shouldn't affect anything if it's in there or not.

    Looks like you got the override to work. You got 50 Hz. I guess any resolution that is 50 Hz is labelled PAL.

    Remember, the EDID override is only used to get Retina resolutions for the new timing. Before you waste time with the EDID override, you should use SwitchResX to test the custom timings. If you can't get a custom timing to work, then the override EDID won't work either.

    Make sure the monitor is set to DisplayPort 1.2 (but I guess you know that since you got it to work in Windows). Here's some pictures of the OSD:

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/asus-pb287q-4k-monitor,3832-3.html

    Is the 1080P on the same bus as the PB287Q? Do they both work on the same bus in Windows? Maybe try putting them on different buses.

    Post the override EDID you're using, or the timing values of a custom timing you have tested that works and that you would like to see in the EDID.

    Last week I bought the "cheap" Mac Pro with the two AMD D300 graphic cards. I Connected it yesterday to my Samsung U28D590D with a standard Cable Displayport mini>Displayport of Delock with a length of 1 meter (Art #82698 spec: max res wqxga 2560x1600, qxga 2048x1536, connector gold plated).

    I didn't change any settings to the monitor or the Mac. It run plug and play immediately 60hz 4k resolution of 3840 x 2160. No artifacts. I ran View and Nikon Capture NX2 on my Mac, very nice crispy "Retina" feeling. I am very happy with my setup.

    I also have the base model 2013 Mac Pro (with the AMD D300 graphics card). It seems that these issues are only happening with the AMD 500's and AMD 700's.

    Can anyone else confirm ToniMaccaroni's experience: that the Samsung 28 inch 4k monitors work with the AMD 300's (60Hz and 4k resolution) with no problems?

    Thanks

    Hi Toni,

    This seems to be consistent with other D300 owners. My problems didn't go away until I installed OS X 10.10 beta and I have the D500's.

    Are you running OS X 10.9.4 or OS X 10.10 beta?

    I read on the Displayport.org site that it doesn't matter which cable you use DP 1.1 or DP 1.2 as they are designed with the same standard. However, that doesn't mean that you can get a poorly manufactured one and have problems.

    From what I see, 4k SST support will be widespread very shortly.

    joevt,

    Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I have one of those jobs that drags me away from technology every now and then. Thanks for your assistance, it has been a great learning experience.

    I eventually got it working at 50Hz on the PB287Q without any problems and then a friend advised that the latest Yosemite build had "fixed" the problem so I deleted all my override files, installed the update and now I can run at either 50Hz or 60Hz on the PB287Q without any problems.

    I can confirm that owners of the D300 builds have not had any problems (as we have two at work).

    Thanks everyone for your help!

    The fix to 50Mhz worked great with my 2013 Mac Pro w/ Dual 500's.

    Thanks,

    I purchased a NEC Multisync EA244UHD IPS display and having the distortion issues with the right side of the screen with Display Port 1.2 at 60hz at any resolution however no issue with Display Port 1.1 at 30hz.  I took my mac pro 10.9.4 with dual D700's into the Apple store and my NEC monitor and they hooked up the monitor to a MacPro with D300's and it worked fine with Display Port 1.2 and 60Hz at any resolution.  The monitor also woke up fine with shutting down or sleeping which is the other problem I have.  I have to jump through hoops to get the MacPro to wake up the NEC monitor even running Display Port 1.1.  It seems that the issue is with my D700's.

    60Hz seems to be the problem with the 500 and 700's. Try the method mentioned in this thread. My Samsung is working great at 30Hz on HDMI or 50Hz on DP.

    Hopefully there will be an Apple provided plist or driver.

    This is what I ended up doing.

    —————

    1 - Go to Launchpad and start Terminal.

    2 - type "sudo -s" and input your password.

    3 - type "cd /System/Library/Displays/Overrides/DisplayVendorID-4c2d/".

    4 - type "pico DisplayProductID-b80"

    5 - copy and paste this inside:

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

    <plist version="1.0">

    <dict>

        <key>DisplayProductID</key>

        <integer>2944</integer>

        <key>DisplayVendorID</key>

        <integer>19501</integer>

        <key>IODisplayEDID</key>

        <data>AP///////wBMLYALAAAAADQXAQS1PSN4Ol+xoldPoigPUFS/74BxT4EAgcCBgKnAswCVANEAq KwAoPBwM4AwIDUAX1khAAAaVl4AoKCgKVAwIDUAX1khAAAaAAAA/QAySx6GNgAKICAgICAgAAAA/ABV M jhENTkwCiAgICAgAXkCAwzwIwkHB4MBAAACOoAYcTgtQFgsRQBfWSEAAB4AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA A AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA A AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAlw==</data>

    </dict>

    </plist>

    Press Control + X, then y

    6 - Reboot, or turn off and change the cable if you're using HDMI, and you're all set.

    -------

    I hope it helps.

    -Chris

    Just incase it this info helps anyone - I have a D300 6 core nMP and could only get very low resolution content to work on Samsung over Display Port. I was using a Deltaco branded 1.2 DisplayPort cable (the only type I could get in Sweden). I swapped it out for a "Clicktronic" branded cable from Amazon Germany and now I'm running at 60Hz in 4K glory! The info on the DisplayPort website about all 1.2 spec cables being the same is BS!

    Also as other posters have noted - there's no tearing on the right hand side of the screen in 10.9.4 on the D300.

    I have the EA244UHD and am having the same problems (D700 cards as well). Have you contacted apple? is there an official response?

    SJScott,

    I have a case open with Apple and have escalated this issue to engineering.  I've also volunteered to help them if needed by testing and such.  I hope they can fix the issue across the board as it looks like this is a common issue.  I'm supposed to hear back early next week.

    Thanks.
