The only way to stop it from automatically downloading to your device is to make sure there's no room for it to download.

Once it downloads you either keep it there or install it.

In Apple's work flow 'why would any one not update?????' so they do everything they can to make it happen. In the same vein, there's no way to dismiss the 'you need to update your apps' badge. In Apple's workflow, everyone should install every update.

iI'm sorry but you are wrong. It will only update automatically if your ipad is plugged in charging and connected to Wi fi. I have been running ios 6 on my ipad 4th generation and I never charge it while connected to wifi, only cellular. The update has never downloaded onto my device but it shows the badge icon with a 1. I repeat it has not downloaded and is not waiting for me to install and is not talking up space.

The update will install via wifi whether charging or not charging. The reason that it won't update when connected via cellular is that cellular downloads are limited to 100MB in size. The iOS update is larger than 100MB.

I don't believe you can stop a started update, but you could try this.

Log out of your iTunes store account.  Go to Settings > Store > Sign Out Then press the Home button.

Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

After the reset, the resume update may be gone be gone.

     Cheers, Tom
