Aug 16, 2014 2:52 PM in response to DonaldRay1979by tmartine, not possible... the only user facing use for the USB port is to restore it if the AppleTV software was be become corrupted... this is done by connecting it to your computer and opening iTunes.
There is nothing to backup on the AppleTV, everything is streamed from the cloud or from computer via iTunes...

Aug 16, 2014 2:58 PM in response to tmartineby DonaldRay1979,thats partly what i mean vista isn't able to pick up the hardware just in case if i was to be able to restore the apple tv cause my windows xp will be going to a family member and all i want the vista to do is to be able to do the restore if i have to redo the apple tv if something was to happen.

Aug 16, 2014 3:03 PM in response to DonaldRay1979by tmartine, but it's not done through the OS... it's done through iTunes... you connect via USB then you go to iTunes and the appleTV will show up there... it will not show up as a drive on your computer if that's what you expect.
and you don't actually back up the AppleTV per se... all you do for a restore is get a fresh copy of the AppleTV OS from Apple's servers...

Aug 16, 2014 6:23 PM in response to DonaldRay1979by tmartine,hmmmm... tried it on a vista machine... looks like AppleTV now gets enough power from the USB port... don't plug your appleTV into wall socket... it won't work with it plug in to wall... only connect the micro-USB with iTunes closed... iTunes will open on it's own and you will be given option to restore... Apple should probably update their support pages to reflect this...

Aug 16, 2014 7:31 PM in response to DonaldRay1979by tmartine,Actually it's me that didn't read closely enough... they do state that's what to do... haven't verified if the 3rd gen. requires the power plugged in.. but I would guess this is accurate... it's a 2nd gen. that I tested with... both look identical on outside, but 3rd gen. has different processor and plays 1080p video.. I have 2 2nd gens. and 1 3rd...
- Connect your Apple TV to a computer (determine which Apple TV model you have):
- Apple TV (2nd generation): Connect one end of the micro-USB cable to the back of your Apple TV, and the other end to one of your computer's USB ports.
- Apple TV (3rd generation): Connect one end of the micro-USB cable to the back of your Apple TV, and the other end to one of your computer's USB ports. Connect the power cable from your Apple TV to a power outlet.
