Aug 16, 2014 10:44 AM in response to theresafromparktonby Andy Z 03,★HelpfulOnce it's connected, it should show an icon on the desktop. Double-clicking that will open the files on the disc. If it's a DVD or CD, it will usually open a corresponding app automatically - in the case of a DVD with content, the DVD Player app, and for a CD, iTunes. Please see the attached picture for what it looks like.

Aug 16, 2014 11:14 AM in response to Andy Z 03by lllaass,An optical with media inserted will only appear on the Desktop if you have that option selected in Finder's preferences.
If there is nt media in the optical drive it will not show up in Finder or on the desktop. If it shows in Finder then yo can click on it in Finder and brose/open the optical disk
Does it show in Finder with media inserted in the optical drive?
In the upper left click on the Apple icon and select About This Mac>More Info>System Report. Is the optical drive listed under USB?

DesktopsThe Apple USB superdrive is a really quirky product that draws more than the allowed 500 milliAmps power from the USB Bus. It does not have a way to accept external Power.
Some Macs have USB ports that can supply more power to run it, some do not. Some Macs have configuration bits set that disallow its use as the default.
It is sold as a way to have a Superdrive attached to Macs that shipped without any other way to read DVDs.
It is a product with a LOT of compromises built in.

Aug 16, 2014 6:18 PM in response to Andy Z 03by theresafromparkton,The disc does appear as an icon on the desk top. Dbl clicking it, however, does not show me the content of the disc. The box that opens asks only what I want to do with the disk. There is a saved slide show on this disk!

Aug 16, 2014 7:05 PM in response to theresafromparktonby Johnb-one,you could try opening it with DVD player, VLC*? or iPhoto. If you click on it once, you should be able to do a "get info " (cloverleaf+I) on it, and choose which program (or application) will open it. Also, as IIIass mentioned, if that option is turned off in the Finder. then your dvd will not show up on the Desktop. I was gonna say iTunes would open it, but that's only if you have Apple TV (D'oh ! )

*go to videolanclient.org, and get it there, it's free as far as I know....

Aug 17, 2014 3:33 AM in response to Johnb-oneby Keith Doherty3,The current black Mac Pro systems with USB 3 can power the superdrive, as can all MacBook Air, MacBook Pro Retina's and current iMac as well as Mac Mini models sans builtin drives.
If you don't /haven't set your desktop to automatically show mounted drives/external drives and discs - Used to be the default however not now.
Go to the desktop (Finder) - click on Finder in menu bar and scroll to Preferences and in the General Tab tick the top four items - They will now appear on the desktop in the right hand side.
Also search and open the DVD player app
Open the preferences pain and under Play Tab choose your desired characteristics such as play in full screen, (automatically)Start Playing Disc, start playing when disc inserted etc.....
For data discs when the disc is mounted and shown on desktop click to open as a finder window and explore away.
For music import open iTunes and again the app preferences and under the General Tab set your desired action for how you want to handle CDs .
Finally in finder do following
System/Library/Coreservices/Menu Extra/Eject.menu
Double click on Eject.menu and an underlined triangle appears in the top bar -Clicking on that will eject/mount any CD/DVD in the drive without leaving what ever window you are currently in.

Aug 17, 2014 10:46 AM in response to theresafromparktonby theresafromparkton,I would like to thank everyone for helping me with my SuperDrive problem.
I am in way over my head at this point in understanding all the great information I am receiving.
I will utilize my One-on-One with a private lesson and let 'Apple' show me!
I had no idea creating a slideshow and trying to download it to a CD or DVD could be so complicated.
Perhaps I have used a PC for too long.
Thank you all once again.
